Zagreb City Guide

overall city rating 68%

Zagreb is not only Croatia's largest city but also its capital. Close to Medvednica Mountain, this central European city can be divided into two main areas. These are the 'Gornij grad' (Upper town) and the 'Donji grad' (Lower town). In the Upper town, which can be reached using a funicular, you'll find many interesting baroque and medieval buildings. Zagreb, which is located on the Sava River in northern Croatia, boasts a huge number of cultural and historical attractions including over 35 museums and art galleries. The Archaeological Museum is home to over 400,000 artefacts, the most famous of which is probably the Zagreb Mummy, while the Croatian Natural History Museum houses a fascinating collection of Neanderthal remains. One of the city’s most notable buildings is the Zagreb Cathedral with its distinctive, towering spires. Ban Jelacic Square, which is the city's main square, is the perfect please for a stroll, and Zagreb also has a wide selection of shops and malls for you to check out. Throughout the year, Zagreb hosts a large number of festivals, and there are lots of bars and restaurants where you can find both local and international fare.

A capital of croatia, zagreb is attractive city for backpackers. I'd recommend to stay for just 1 night, or even half a day, since all the major attractions are within walking distance from the train station.

Zagreb is a very good starting city for any traveller coming in from Italy direction. It has history in many museums, glorious monuments and beautiful architecture. It also has the spin of modernism in its youthful culture. If the city centre gets a bit much then head south west to the… more
