There are about 15 museums in all, so it's best to choose a few and take a day or two exploring those. I found the National Air & Space Museum and National Museum of Natural History to be the most interesting. Washington has many memorials and buildings of interest. I got tours of the US Capitol (seat of US government) and the White House. Of course, you don't get to ramble around, but it is nice to visit such well known landmarks. Overall, Washington DC is a great place to visit. The Smithsonian museums alone are worth the effort. Some prior knowledge of American history and politics brings extra value to some of the other places on offer. Getting around was straightforward. A shuttle bus took me to and from my hotel to the metro station. The metro is clean and efficient and brings you to (or close to) many places of interest.close

It has great culture, heritage and sightseeing i.e. the White House, the White House Museum, Capital Hill, the Lincoln Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. There is so much history in Washington and most of the museums are free!! It is very easy to get around and a surprisingly laid back city! The city also has a great night life, I stayed in DuPont Circle, where the streets were lined with cafes and bars.close

The majority of the sites are all within walking distance of each other (Capitol, Monument, the memorials and White House). The Smithsonian museum complex is massive though so we only got to see one of the museums there. We were lucky enough to be there for the cherry blossom trees being in full bloom (end Mar/beg Apr) so that definitely added to the pictures! DC is very much a student/politician's area especially if you're staying around the main sites. Downtown is apparently a bit rough but we didn't get there. We went to Georgetown for dinner and drinks. The restaurant selection was fair but there wasn't that many bars and the ones that were there were packed with students. Probably would have been good for anyone under 25. We walked around all the sites and didn't use public transport so I can't comment on that. However, it seemed pretty easy to use.close

Between politics, monuments and the Smithsonian, there's more to see than could fit into a week. It was my first time and loved seeing the Nation's capital in person. The metro made it really easy to get around, though there could have been a few stops closer to certain areas. (For some of the monuments you have to walk about a mile from the nearest stop.) For a budget trip this place is awesome. Pretty much everything we went to see/do was free.close

Very nice room, lots of space per bed, good shower, very clean. Only downside was no lockers. Good location near Dupont Circle, lots of places to eat and drink nearby. Very happy, would stay here again.

  3. The Allen Lee Hotel 72%

Read some bad reviews about this place but found it to be absolutely fine. Reserved room for 2 people and got double bed plus bunk beds to use. Room and bathroom were clean and everything worked. Location was good, a shortish walk to the tube station.

15 minute walk to the Whitehouse and a good supermarket ("Whole Foods") 5 minutes walk - so a reasonable location. Rooms were comfortable if a bit worn. We had a pleasant stay.

If you visit the National Gallery of Art in DC be sure and check their website before you go to see what tours or special art talks are going on during the time you are there. I took the Italian Renaissance and French Impressionist tours as well as listened to one of the art historians give a talk about a couple of Canaletto paintings. Each lasted 1 hour and...

The most popular attraction in D.C. includes free guided tours of the house, well, some of the rooms anyway. Don't expect to meet the president himself while you visit but you may be able to catch a glimpse of him at times. Beware that this attraction will likely have a looong line, even first thing in the morning. But don’t let that stop you from going,...

Top Rated Washington DC Bars

  1. Fadó Bar100%

Fadó was one of the only Irish bars I found in Washington; it is a great Irish bar in the city centre. The bar is decorated as a traditional old Irish style bar. I had great craic the few nights I went here, the staff were friendly, food was lovely and the live bands were brilliant!! And they made one of the best hangover frys I’ve ever had!!
