During the six weeks that I am spending in Europe (5 weeks in Vienna, one in Berlin), I've been on a mission to see and get as much culture as I possibly can. One of my highlight of last week was the Sisi Museum, housed in the venerable Hofburg, right in the middle of Vienna's glamorous first...
more first district. The museum is small (which I like -- not too overwhelming) and very well organized. Sisi, or the empress of Austria, Elisabeth, was a tragic and somewhat controversial figure, and very glamorous at the same time. While very progressive for her time, she was also widely criticized for her lack of attention to her royal duties. Instead, she'd focus on her equestrian skills and on keeping fit and healthy (yes, there's even an exercise room!). I didn't really know that much about Sisi and her life (which was romanticized in the Sisi movies that launched Romy Schneider's career), and felt that the museum gave me a good overview. While a few rooms are currently under construction, it's a fantastic place. The audio guide was very good and free, too. I recommend spending about two hours here. As is to be expected, one is immediately channeled into the gift store after the walk-through, but there's some good stuff to be found there. I almost bought a mini hair clip in the shape
