If visiting in Spring try to get there for the feast of St. Paul-make sure you get down to St. Paul's Shipwreck Church when they arrive with the statue-drinking, shouting, fireworks, bands and confetti-now that's religion for you! Vittoriosa (Birgu) is across the harbour and well worth a visit. At some stage in August each year thousands of candles are placed around the city and the city lights are turned off and a play is performed outside the church.close

Great for history and culture lovers. Very steep hills with innumerous long flights of steps but really worth the effort. Local people very friendly and helpful - we didn't feel threatened by crime in any way unlike Rome!!
