Kings Cross probably wasn't the best place for a timid first-time traveller to start his Australian adventure as it's a bit of a boisterous, in your face kind of place but the staff at Mates were really helpful. Rich and T have done an outstanding job at Bedlam. Bedlam definitely has a great attiute with hanging out and being friendly. The main reason behind that is of the welcoming way that Rich and T make everyone feel when they arrive and stay at the hostel.

Friendliest hostel I stayed at in Australia, both the staff and other travellers are very friendly, they arrange stuff for the evenings, it's not for people that want a quiet time.

we came initially to stay for 1 week and now we cant bring ourselves to leave;)ive been travelling for 13 months and it has the best atmosphere of any hostel ive stayed in so far. Staff super friendly and the proximity of the bar across d road helps:)

I loved this place! It's got a great central location, there's always somewhere to go at night, and local kebab places that stay open always. Great, fun atmosphere. Don't stay here if you're boring and just want to sleep. Very accomodating staff... Am definitely going to go back here!!

Right around the corner is the empire bar, where al lot of partys take place. If you live in the mat's place you get some vouchers for free drinks. So partying is very easy :)

The dorm that we were checked in pretty much had people living in it, it was so messy and dirty. We could not even use the toilet.

Hostel has a good location and the staff is very friendly. It´s not the cleanest place, but if you´re on sight-seeing, the location is an advantage.

Was an ok place, but as a single female traveller, going home at night to the Red Light District doesn't feel terribly safe!

Great hostel, staff very friendly and clean kitchen and bathrooms. Only problem it is hard to get a hot shower. But overall very good for the price.

Great hostel with a great location....real friendly and helpful staff...even checking up on my whereabouts when I decided to do a disappearing act for a weekend!...was great that the room had a fridge and bathroom...would highly recommend a stay here if you travel to sydney

I had a really good time at Mates place and will be staying there again when i pass through Sydney. Everyone was really friendly and invited me out the night i got there and Rich makes everyone feel welcome!!

I was a little unsure at first..BUT it ended up being a BLAST!! Rich is soo nice, he upgraded us for no extra charge! Free internet, towels, cutlery, most rooms have fridges. Another hostel booked for xmas we needed somewhere to stay for a few days, we'd heard about the cross and just chose one from browsing. We were greeted by Richard, he checked us in (early) and sorted out the wi-fi... we were good to go! The first night was messy, free drinks... bear in mind we'd just got to Oz so this was all new... what a welcome! I spent about $5 all night! The other hostel messed up our booking and Rich & T managed to swing three of us back in, at short notice for the xmas period... not easy at all!! We stayed a while here, out with friends, staff and local bar owners daily... I'm almost all partied out! I managed to work a bit to pay rent so that's available, PS3 was set up in TV room now and then... rooms a decent size and cleaned daily... Free wi-fi... Erm, what else can I say? Best hostel I've stayed in, by far. Cheers guys and sorry it took so long to review!close

Hostels aren't 5 star accommodation. Those who expect it to be need a reality check. However, Mates Place has been the best hostel I have ever stayed in. I had a great time and will deffinately come back! Thanks guys

Staff was very friendly, and location of Hostel was great (Kings Cross party centre). But it was a old building and the rooms/facilities wern't clean. The rooms are pretty messy and it was very loud and noisy. For a night or two it's ok.
