Split is the largest city in the Dalmatia region, as well as the second largest in Croatia. Benefiting from a Mediterranean climate, it is located on a peninsula along the Adriatic Coast. The city has a strong literary history and is an important centre of culture in Croatia. Each summer, the city hosts two important festivals to showcase traditional Croatian music and also theatre. These are the Split Music Festival and the Split Summer Festival and they are enjoyed by a large number of tourists. The city was founded by the Roman Emperor, Diocletian in the 3rd century. Today, Diocletian’s Palace is home to some of the main historical places of interest in the city. The Palace itself, as well as the Cathedral and Peristile are popular with visitors.

But, much to my surprise, the weather was excellent, it was almost hot, and we even went swimming to the city beach. The beach is very nice, the sea is really clean. As about food, do not expect a gourmet dinner there. The most common food in restaurants are fish or pizza. Both really good, but nothing special. For pizza i reccomend the F-cafe in the harbour area. And do try the Dingac wine - not too cheap, but worth the price.close

There are plenty of shops in and around the Diocletian palace, which also provides the setting for one fantastic bar/pub crawl (check out details in the lastest Time Out Croatia Guide). The beach is also lovely with great bars and restaurants. You can easily enjoy a full seafood meal with starter and plenty of wine plus desert for under £20. If you're travelling from the UK, this will seem like great value holiday.close

I'd recommend that you spend as little time there as possible and maximise your time in Dubrovnik and the islands.close

If it`s just to get away from the big cities or to simply take in the coast. It is very much situated on the Adriatic with the beach and harbour as a focal point. But in no way is the city a resort, everything is done at such a relaxed pace and on the whole most of locals are friendly. It is easy to get around, it will take a day maybe a day and half to get used to how the city is laid out. But once you do relaxation is guaranted.close

The ruins of Salona, the old Roman capital, are worth checking out too. For some reason the restaurant area by the sea smells of sewage - not very appetizing. Gradska Kavana further into the town was pretty okay though. The town is a bit less obviously touristy and unified than Dubrovnik, but also less friendly.close

Plush apartment about 5-10 minutes from town in a good location. We rented the self-contained flat which has excellent facilities. All new, clean and very lovely. Would recommend.

The hotel Kastel is in an excellent position in Split town centre. The owner and his family are very nice, friendly people who are extremely helpful. They speak very good english, and are very obliging. The hotel is extremely clean and very comfortable place to stay. I would recommend this...

This place is more like an apartment with private rooms. The facilities are all excellent and the location could not be better. The staff are extremely friendly and helped me find a hospital easily when i needed one. I would stay there again.

    • What?

        Pizzeria
    • Where?

Located by the marina in at the end of the Promenade
    • Anything Else?

The pizzeria serves a large selection of pizzas, with seafood having a strong influence. Enjoy a pleasant view of the marina from you seat.

Great location - just overlooking the marina and the harbour. Small pizzeria and bar. Pizzas made in open oven. Delicious! some unusual pizzas there too for the more adventurous!

Top Rated Split Attractions

  1. Diocletian Palace100%

There was something quite surreal about using a hole-in-the-wall cash machine embedded into a Roman ruin. It is amazing to see how the palace has been lived in and used over the years, and how it is still somewhere where you can walk through on the polished marble floors.
