Singapore guide
A city, island and country, Singapore has a reputation for different things. Some consider it the most important financial centre in South-East Asia, while others think of it as a sterile city where everything runs like clockwork. Both these assumptions aren't that far away from the truth. This may not paint the most colourful picture in the world though. But don't fret - there is a lot to see. Singapore has a beach to bask in, stores to shop in, sights to snap at, and some of Asia's most fascinating neighbourhoods. Whether your trip is part of a journey around South-East Asia, or as a stop-over to or from Australia, you're bound to enjoy your stay.

However in the crowded streets of Chinatown, fortune tellers, calligraphers and temple worshippers are still a part of everyday life. In Little India, you can buy the best sari material, freshly ground spices, or a picture of your favorite Hindu god. In the small shops of Arab Street, the cry of the imam can be heard from the nearby Sultan Mosque.close

Hangout @ Mt. Emily 85%
Mt Emily is your typical YHA Hostel. Clean to the point of being sterile and borders more on the budget hotel side than hostel. All that said it has a great roof top garden with views over the city and is within easy walking distance of Little India and MRT station. No surprises here, and is a...

1Enjoyed our stay; the location is excellent but being Little India it has its own noisiness and other distractions. However, it is an excellent place for the price paid. Would recommend it to anyone.

7Beach Hotel is located near the MRT so its pretty convenient for guests. But its staff especially the female ones are snobbish and unaccommodating. You cannot expect more than you pay for, so this hotel is good for its price.

Newton Hawker Centre80%
Singapore is famous for its hawker centres, and if you want to go to the city's most famous one then visit this one. It's a bit out of the city centre, which is a bit of a pain (there's a subway station nearby though), but food is cheap and plentiful.

The Changi Museum is dedicated to the civilian internees and POWs held during the Japanese occupation of Singapore in 1942. It is particularly moving and definitely worth a visit as a testimony to the inhumanity of war, and for the heartening resourcefulness in the face of extreme adversity. Entrance is free but it is well worth paying for the audio...

Landmark of Singapore. Got to see. Sir Stamford Raffles found Singapore 1819. Well, vibrant city, expensive though. Pubbing very expensive, but check out the hawker center, everywhere you can find. Hainanese Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak, Sting Ray BBQ, Malay Rice, Cha Kway Teow. Singapore is a food haven. Transportation very convenient, subway.

I'm not a big fan of going to see animals in confined spaces, so I never visit zoos when travelling. But Singapore's 'Night Safari' is different - the animals are walking around pretty much in the open! This enormous park has zebra, lions, elephants and way more. Not to be missed.

Orchard Road for large shopping malls and top brand names, but don't expect rock-bottom prices for top labels. Go to Chinatown and Little India for smaller shops and market stalls.

Dragonfly is in the old St James Power Station down near the Harbourfront (that's just before the bridge over to Sentosa). This is a bar/club that has lots of 'bands' on for short sets - well, they were not so much bands as 'live acts' that looked like they had grown up on karaoke and Pop Idol. Nevertheless, a great vibe and good entertainment. Get down...

The Singapore Sling comes premixed, but you can enjoy yourself shelling peanuts and throwing the husks on the floor as you imagine yourself in a bygone era of colonial decadence. Ceiling fans, of the wafting kind rather than the whirling kind, deep-set verandahs and an opulent colonial style make it a great place to put your feet up on a trip around town....
