This hostel doesn't exist! At the location there was no staff to help us. Locals directed us to another hostel. The telephone number of Shanghai Guesthouse was out of order. We happily could book another hostel at Shanghai. Be careful before booking a hostel,

Impossible to find.. may in fact now be a construction site. Unless they start providing much more detailed directions / exact location I'd pay the extra for somewhere else... May be ok if you can read Mandarin.

Probably the strangest experience ever! As soon as you get there ask for Mr Lee (the man who speaks english), he is a top bloke and will sort out anything you need. And by the way....the beds a very very comfortable even by western standards. The lady will probably be ill prepared for your... more Probably the strangest experience ever! As soon as you get there ask for Mr Lee (the man who speaks english), he is a top bloke and will sort out anything you need. And by the way....the beds a very very comfortable even by western standards. The lady will probably be ill prepared for your arrival but just be patient with her and dont let her get on your nerves too much! Breakfast (and sometimes lunch) included and FREE laundry. Thumbs up!close

Nothing in the description or reviews indicated that this was a couple of rooms in a private house. This would have been fine but we were surprised and a little taken aback, after our difficulty in finding it (in a residential apartment block). The location is good but they seemed rather... more Nothing in the description or reviews indicated that this was a couple of rooms in a private house. This would have been fine but we were surprised and a little taken aback, after our difficulty in finding it (in a residential apartment block). The location is good but they seemed rather unprepared for our arrival, though perfectly friendly, and when we considered the need for a swipe card to enter the building and that it wasn't totally clean (hair all over the bathroom), we decided to go elsewhere.close

Clean, modern. comfortable room with fantastic night view of pearl tower and Shanghai. Can walk to the Bund and the garden. Near to buses. Mrs Lee does not speak English, but managed to communicate with phrase book and she is very helpful. Mr Lim speaks English and you can talk to him on the... more Clean, modern. comfortable room with fantastic night view of pearl tower and Shanghai. Can walk to the Bund and the garden. Near to buses. Mrs Lee does not speak English, but managed to communicate with phrase book and she is very helpful. Mr Lim speaks English and you can talk to him on the phone or he comes in during the evening. Free Internet, and washing done for you for free. Fruit and substantial breakfast provided, hot and cold drinking water also provided. Small place, so no other westeners staying while we were there, but there is a common room with tv and tv in bedroom. Not the atmosphere of the hostels but a nice place to stay. The bed was hard even by Chinese standards, so Mr Lim took thick foam from another bed to put on. Would recommend.close
