They had not the booking I made through your website so had to pay the total cost of the room. Don't know if this was an error of your website or the hostels.

Awsome bar with a view of downtown. Stayed in private room which was clean. One reservation was that we 'lost' a remote, which I think was the staff trying to get additional money out of us. When they inspect ur room please go with them!

This place misses the hostel character, where staff always is ready to help you. It seemed to me more like a hotel. If the location wasn't that good, I would not stay there again.

we were in shanghai for just a few nights and this hostel was great because of the location. it's so easy to get around the city because it's right next to the bund and just a few blocks away from nanjing road. the staff wasn't very friendly but that's my only complaint. everything else was great!

I hung a no entry sign, but when I came back after 20mins, the room has been entered by the staff because they need to change to new furnitures.

This is more like a hotel than a hostel. The rooms were nice but everything - bar and internet included - was so overpriced. Staff were very unhelpful.

This hostel is great value and the rooms give the appearance of a real hotel: spacious, clean and well decorated. The captain bar is expensive and frequently nearly empty, making it less fun than it ought to be; however, the view was spectacular and well worth it.

The attitude of staff at this hostel was appalling. Their view was that this was our problem and they should offer us no assistance or apology. They were determined to push the blame onto the booking agent, but we were convinced this was a charade to protect their own backsides! Every hostel we stayed at in China had outstanding staff who would go out of their way to assist. The management at Captain Hostel should be way more selective in choosing appropriately skilled front desk staff; remember if you pay peanuts you get monkeys!!close

Alles in allem "GUT"....

The Dongshi's staff are actually very helpful, very good english - although with no smiles., but much better than the Captain Hostel staff. The room was clean, but I had to change rooms the first night - due to very drunken party going on in the next room. Still had to go to the Captain Hostel for the Internet computers - but only 25metre walk between both. Still went to the roof top bar at the Captain for dinner and happy hour etc. Next time, I will stay at the Dongshi Hotel and use the Captain Hostel like I did this time - best compromise I think.close

The manager of the hostel took us to a dirty and disgusting hotel near there, where anybody could speak english, apart form the humidity and smell of tobacco, which made our stay there really disappointing. Also the manager wasn´t very professional and it gave us the sensation of "get ride of this people as soon as possible". After a month travelling around, we got reallay ungry when all this happened. I wouldnt recommend at all to assume the risk of booking at captain hostel.close

However, for what we payed we could have taken the subway from a cleaner hostel many times over. The lobby is amazing, but the room was not very clean, and our view was not of the water front but of the shacks beside it. The staff did not speak very good english, and the bar/restaurant staff spoke next to none. If seeing the bund at sunrise is part of your plan then this is a good spot as the subway lines dont run before the sun comes out.close

Apparantly the person in 'our room' had had his flight delayed and needed to stay for an additional night. They wanted to move us to another hostel for 1 night and then for us to return the following night. We refused to move and stood our ground and eventually they found us a room with a double bed which we took (good job we're good friends!) for the first night. The following day we were moved to a twin room which was brilliant - plenty of room and with private facilities. I would certainly recommend this hostel, and it has a great bar on the roof with brilliant views over the Bund.close

When we returned to pick up our luggage, after booking out, I had to use the toilet, my wife tried to wait in the Reception area for me, but was told by a male staff member that she had to be eating in this area and if not she would have to leave!! When I returned from the toilet and she told me of what had happened I let the male staff know just what I thought of their rude, discourteous behaviour - they were totally unrepentant and continued to argue their case. What kind of customer relations is that? Purely on this hostile treatment from the hotel staff I would have to give this hotel a very negative feedback regarding customer relations. They have a lot to learn!!close

Regarding security: In order to get to the bar on the top floor everyone walks through the hostel, including non residents. Personally I think this is a bit risky. There should be a seperate access to the bar for non residents of the hostel.
