The town of Belgrade was, for me, full of contrasts : The real wealthy versus poverty shocking for a European country, tourist want to understand the culture yet it is a closed book when asking the locals, politics in Serbia is an absolute distant from the people who do not tend to understand the views of the people they elected for .... Like I said hope is needed . So partying backpackers enjoy the mild culture shock and get here. Two days is more than enough to stay in Belgrade.close

How mistaken can people really be? Belgrade is a warm and friendly city and the people know how to relax and socialise. A few phrases of Serbian will go a long way in making new friends and uncovering the hidden treasures of this remarkable city. From chilled out bars to hip clubs and traditional fare to high class restaurants, Belgrade has it all and allowing 4-5 days in the city will really give you a great insight to the culture of the modern Serbian nation.close

It has a nightlife that is hard to match, and the shopping scene is as good-if not better than most western countries. There are a few decent sights in the city, not completely packed with them but enough to keep you busy. I had a great time in Belgrade and would recommend anyone in the area to pop in and have a lookclose

For this you need a real Serb to show you but this is not difficult at all. All Serbs are so friendly that you will soon be crossing broken train tracks under the romantic Kalamegdan, walking along the riverbank or hanging out in real traditional underground Serbian bars. Architecture may be lacking on the typical gigantic and specifically constructed beauty (although there is some of this type) but there is a different sad and subtle beauty which is much more interesting. This is a city in transition, and it's beautiful to be part of the life there.close

Compact and walkable, with varied sights including museums, art galleries, an ancient citadel, bomb sites, nice parks and squares and great architecture. The shopping streets are bustling and lively, the people are friendly. General service is good and plenty of non-touristy cafes and restaurants to enjoy traditional food in large servings, or coffee and cake. Didn't sample the nightlife but fellow travellers loved - staying out til well past sunrise with live bands and clubs aplenty, not to mention the boat clubs sitting on the river! Great base to explore the rest of Serbia, which is rich in outdoor activities such as rock climbing, horse riding, canyoning, cycling and trekking. The weather was OK, cold and foggy as it was nearing winter. I'd suggest going in summer to get the best out of the countryside.close

Also had a great lunch (good value for money) in the Movie Bar in the centre of the town. Staff at some of the other places we ate were quite rude however (maybe this is just the Belgradian way) but it is also clear that the city is not ready for tourists just yet. Unfortunately the poor hostel I stayed at tainted my view of this city and its people from the start. After the mad welcome I got everyone else seemed a bit crazy too!!!close

The local people are nice although only some speak English or German. Conversion rate is good for Euro or USD. The local fortess is beautiful and worth a visit. I would say in about 3-5 years Belgrade will go from a good tourist location to a great one.close

It has it all, the activities, the bars, the restaurants, the architecture, the wonderfully friendly people. I cannot understand why this amazing, vibrant city is not visited by more travellers. Yes it's had it's ups and downs, but as far as we could see, it's downs are well and truly behind it. Visit the Majestic citadel and relax in the park at any one of the numerous park cafes and bars. stroll through the bohemian quarter of Skadarska where bars, restaurants and roadside craft and antique stalls abound. Shop "High Street" style in the city's main pedestrian area. Or simply wander the streets and look up to see the wonderful buildings, old and new, that make this city as interesting to look at as it is to experience. We have travelled extensively in Eastern Europe and of all the capital cities we have visited (Budapest, Bucharest, Sofia, Sarajevo, Kiev) this leaves them all behind. Only Prague can compare. In addition we have never encountered a people with such pride in their city or culture, or with such an undiguised and unselfish desire to share it. Belgrade, what more do you want?close

Beograd / Belgrade Zoo20%
Ok, Belgrade is not blessed with a wide range of sightseeing options - so having fast run out of options, I took on the Zoo. Its horrible - another fine example of what wasn't right about 70s style communism. It houses a variety of animals, or so it has - but most seem to be off the aviary kind. Animals seem to be kept in appalling conditions. I was not...
