It's well placed on the rail network for getting to the rest of Galicia & it's well worth taking a look at the surrounding countryside. Staff in bars & restuarant were, with one notable exception, extremely friendly & helpful. Given the area's reputation for rain, we were extremely lucky with the weather on our trip.close

During Easter week there were many free cultural events held around the city such as the Festival of Contemplative Music. The city is extremely picturesque & perfect for just strolling around with no fixed purpose, simply enjoying the atmosphere. There are lovely little cafes dotted around the city. Overall, very good value for money. My only small complaint was that it was much colder in April than I would have ever imagined! My first purchase was some gloves & an umbrella! But, despite the chill, I really hope to return to this lovely city in the future.close

The centre piece of the city is the fantasic 13th Century Cathedral with a imposing 16th Century facade. Here lies the mortal remains of St. James 'Moromatar' who has a special place in Spainsh hearts. The new town boasts shops, bars and nightclubs, but the real attraction lies in the pedestrianised streets of the old town where you can wander from cafe to cafe, sampleing great tapas as you go. The real culinary adventure starts in the evening with delights from every corner of the sea. Lobster and crab vi for poition in the restaurant tanks waiting for their turn on the menu.Barnicles, oysters, and the amazingly tasty Navajas (razor shell clams) are other options but the real speciality is Pulpo Gallego (Octopus in oil and paprika). All in all the city is fantastic value for money with a glass of wine in a cafe about 1E to a full three course seafood dinner for two at 60E. Santiago is a charming city and well worth a stop on anyones itnerary!close

I didn't even wander out of it until well into my second day. There's a proper modern city if you keep walking south out of the old town, with bars, shops, cinemas etc. I realise that isn't what a lot of you are looking for, but having toured all the way round Spain, I really did have enough of cathedrals and plazas to last a life time. The old town is splendid, but you can only wander around the cobbled streets for so long before you get a bit tired of it, so it's worth a wee wander down into the main city.close

Everywhere you look in the old city you will see beautiful architecture, quaint narrow cobbled streets and affordable cafes, restaurants and tapas bars where you can relax and read a book or just watch the world go by. It's a great place to relax and isn't completely over-run with tourists. The people are very friendly and helpful, even if you do not speak the language. The women are gorgeous too, which helps, and the lads aren't bad either I was told! Overall, Santiago de Compostela is well worth visiting.close
