Known for being the birthplace of the famous composer Mozart, Salzburg is the 4th largest city in Austria. Hugely popular with tourists, the city is also home to the large number of students attending Salzburg’s three universities. It’s close to the Alps and visitors can enjoy the many hiking trails in the hills surrounding the city. The Old Town is awash with example of Baroque architecture, with spires being a notable feature of the city’s skyline. The Festung Hohensalzburg is one of the biggest medieval castles in Europe and can be reached by cable car. Other main attractions include the Salzburg Cathedral and the Mirabell Palace and Gardens. Mozartkugel, a local handmade chocolate, can be savoured in Alter Markt Square and there are many beer gardens across the city where visitors can mingle with the locals. Every year music and drama is celebrated at the Salzburg festival. It runs for five weeks and starts in July.

It is like a setting from a fairytale.. It has a lot going for it. I love its size, big enough to keep you busy, yet small enough to navigate on foot and maintain the personality that is evident there. Everybody is friendly, everybody welcoming ... and a bit nosey. (in a good way) 2 days is enough in Salzburg for the touristy stuff. (im thinkin mozart and the sound of music, I spent a week there, had enough after 2 days once all this was done ... then I scratched below the surface and wanted even longer. The only negative thing i will say relates to the Salzburg nightlife .... with the problem being the chronic lack of it. If you travel to party do not come here, if you travel to escape and relax, book your flight and book your hotel on boo.close

Having been brought up on a staple diet of his music and watching the film Amadeus umpteen times I made sure that on a round Europe trip this was one of my destinations. I didn't let the fact that "The Sound of Music" was filmed there put me off either. As well as the city, the surrounding countryside is stunning. A train ride into the city reveals a panorama of mountains and forests that are straight out of a Grimm storyline. I had a most relaxing couple of days, just wandering around, taking in the sights and sounds. I was lucky enough to be with someone as equally as passionate about Mozart as me so we spent our first day wandering around on a Mozart tour - a nice walk, coffees in the cafés and lunch outdoors and a lesiurely wander around his birthplace and his residence. We were lucky enough to schedule the trip around the time of a classical concert so that was enjoyable. The city has lots more to offer. The city was preparing for the Salzburg music festival at the time so it was all a bustle, but that didn't detract from the less-than-hectic lifestyle. There were lots of good coffee houses, cafés, beer gardens and pubs to spend the evening in. All in all a great holiday. Probably not for more than a few days, but a definite must-stop-in city...close

Check out Wilder Mann as LP suggests for good Austrian food and chat to some locals. A good night in itself.close

Great location, right in old town center. The breakfast in the morning was great and the staff was nice. Although, the showerhead was low so you had to bend to get under it which was a little different.

The hotel is in Germany and you have to take a train to get to Salzburg. The rooms are extremely nice and the free breakfast is great. The owners were nice enough to drive me to the train station themselves, which I really appreciated (not having to call a cab was great).

Send an Irish man to Austria .... whats the first thing he does ....looks for an Irish bar. Strange i know, but it's what we do. It just so happens that O malleys is one of the best Irish bars in Europe and probably the best pub in Salzburg, which is a very quiet city. Head for O malleys, (theres another irish pud called the shamrock or something next door)...
