This part of the beach is where the young and beautiful hang out and soak up the sun. Gorgeous women in Brazilian bikinis and handsome, tan muscular men in their sungas (banana hammocks but nicer) check each other out and sit VERY close to each other, especially around Carnaval. There wasn't much room to sit when I was there so you can make friends easily! Don't expect a quite day at the beach. Beach vendors call out their wears and can be bothersome, but you can shop while you soak in the sun. Don't bring anything you might want to lose, just your canga (sarong) and a little bit of money for coconut water and snacks. You can rent beach chairs, lounge chairs, umbrellas and more right on the beach. The ocean water at Ipanema beach seems to be cleaner than over at Copacabana depending on the weather.close
