The staff, however, do give these warnings to try to help you to stay safe. The hostel is a good place for meeting others and is regularly cleaned (although we did see 2 rats in the terrace area, but this probably can't be avoided!) Breakfast was good and internet always available!close

They bend over backward to do anything to help you out. Only problem is the location. Day is fine, no prob. But night you have to leave your passport and camera behind, or find tall, fit fellow travellers to accompany. Taxis won't come here at night from anywhere but Lapa--at which point you might as well walk the rest of the way. Taxis say it's because of driver safety. I think that's bunk, that it's because they don't want to drive their taxis uphill on cobblestones, safety is not THAT bad a problem. But the fact remains that the transit is a problem for you when the streetcar and buses have stopped running and you are not in the company of aforementioned fellow travellers. Stay here a bit to see Santa Teresa and Central--for heaven's sake don't stay in Central--but then move yourself to Bota, Copa, or Ipa. You'll see more of the city that way anyway.close

Good central location. Attracts a good crowd of people. Staff could be a little more helpful with travel arrangements but are otherwise friendly.

A very relaxing stay in a great hostel. This is the real Brazil, nestled in the hills above the city in Santa Teresa amongst artisan shops and restaurants, Rio Hostel is a fantastic place to take in the vibe of the city. Great staff, great atmosphere, a top place to wind down and chill. Very...

I´ve been traveling for 9 month and until today I haven´t seen such a great place. The best hostel in Rio in the best neighborhood - Santa Teresa.

The location is special, you can either love it or hate it (far from the most touristy Rio). I personally liked to see this part of the city, although is not the safest.

No hot water. Area is unsafe to take public transport alone. A lot of muggers in area (although probably true of most of Rio). Never take valuables out with you - leave passports and tickets at the hostel!

Later we heard from a friend living in Rio that the area around the aquaeduct is known for robbery. So if you stay there make sure you take train or bus to downtown to avoid walking past. Hostel staff did not warn us not to walk there while Rio people already seem to know this area. But else Hostel is clean and relaxed, offers a small breakfast for free, has a nice view towards the city with this old train passing directly in front of the hostel. If you dont mind traffic noise at night then its a nice old house on hillside. To enter Hostel you have to crawl up a steep stair halfway up the hill (50 steps?) so dont take too much luggage unless you want to start training for olympic games but this gives a extra plus for atmosphere (once luggage is upstairs) when sitting with other guests at the balcony watching traffic go by.close

The night life just down the road is brilliant with a really local flair; not many tourist. location wise its a bit far form the beaches, but this is compensated by the quality of this hostel, i was on a stage, that i did not want to leave; i met people they have been there for a month, because they liked it so much even though they origanally planned 5 days. Probably the best hostel in the worl; and i have been travelling a lot.close
