Staying in the Favela is a true Brasilian experience. You`re not in a touristy area which is always good and you get to meet with the friendly locals. This home stay accomodation is something you would never experience in a regular hostel. Good people, good stories and a great time.

The favela is near Sao Conrado which is a nice beach and only a 10 min bus ride to Ipanemaclose

Ok, it's true, Favela Hostel is not an ordinary hostel. But there is no reason to refuse going anywhere near it just because of that. Especially if you're looking for an alternative view of Rio. The location has its problems, but we considered it ok. The surroundings felt perfectly safe, and... more Ok, it's true, Favela Hostel is not an ordinary hostel. But there is no reason to refuse going anywhere near it just because of that. Especially if you're looking for an alternative view of Rio. The location has its problems, but we considered it ok. The surroundings felt perfectly safe, and we got the feeling that the people in this small community respect the hostel and its guests a lot. The fact remains that it takes a while on a bus to get to downtown, and close to where all the "major sights" are. But it´s also true that in a big city like Rio you have to spend time travelling inside the city anyway. The hostel's just a few hundred meters from the nearest bus stop in Sao Conrado. We can only speak for ourselves, but our room was very good, with a huge bed and a shared toilet, probably the cleanest in South America in five months. The breakfast was excellent, and the staff very very friendly. Everything was SO expensive during Carnaval time, but that's the case no matter where you stay. Favela Hostel is probably one of the most economic options. This was our second time in Rio. We stayed in Botafogo first, which was nice. However, staying in Vila Canoas gave us more perspective, and thought us something important. We say don't do the human zoo tour. Be there, and see that it's not what you might have thought it is like.close

I was told by a few people that it was dangerous to stay in this area but I had no problems whatsoever. Excellent friendly staff, cheaper food than touristy areas and near the gorgeous Sao conrado beach. The hostel also arranges various excursion from parties to forest walks. Good job Eneida! Ben...

A really enjoyable stay. Close enough to the beach to walk but out of the busiest part of town. Copocabana and Ipanema are around a 20-30 min bus journey away.
