Met some great people here. Got to go bobsledder as well. The hostel itself is easy to find and very comfortable. The kitchen is super too. I slept great here. I would definitely stay here again if I came back to Riga!

This is a great location in the commercial heart of Riga; i.e. the place where the local population works, shops, eats and entertains itself as opposed to the old town tourist center where you will see mostly foreigners in the evenings.

Carlis really makes you feel at home and welcome in Riga. Very chilled place. These guys also run a tour company so they can help you organise anything relating to your trip.

Good accomodation for a good price. Especially for those, who went by car (a lot of parking facilities). Not far from the Old town, and walking you can see whole diversity of Riga's architecture. Kind staff, clean rooms, good kitchen.

under new management, they still needed to get little things organised like toiletpaper, kitchentrash, etc. but very helpful and a real comfy place. (although the aircons underneath the windows can get a bit noisy at night).

The hostel manager was very friendly and helpful. I arrived at the hostel after midnight and the manager was waiting for me. I didn't have any Latvian Latts when I arrived at the hostel, so the manager changed my 10 GBP for 10 LVL, which is more than generous exchange rate. He also gave the map of the town and showed me the places on the map where I could eat cheaply. The hostel was very clean and cosy with a relaxed atmosphere. I really recommend other travelers to stay at this hostelclose

The living room was spacious with setees and armchairs to relax and read. It was lovely in the afternoon and evenings but at night there was the problem. There was a problem for non-smokers because smoking was allowed on the balcony but when one or two were smoking there their partners and friends came along and opened the doors to talk to them and it amounted to a smoker's living room in effect which kept me coughing and having difficulty breathing. at night there was a mechanical pounding beat which kept me awake in the early hours with my fingers pressed against my ears. on the last night there it got so bad my ears began to pain me. there was loud shreiking and hooting from alcoholic types being a nuisance and at first I thought maybe the owners lived off the property. i wanted to sleep because i had to catch a plane the next morning and then travel by bus for 11 hours to get home. when i got up and when to where all the noise was coming from i was shocked to find the owners in the living room smoking, drinking and blasting off with the rock detritus. i thought them a sensible couple but thugie is as thugie does and I had to turn down the speaker on the computer system and get down on my knees, crawl under the table and pull out all the plugs on the lead and from the wall. i noted it was 4.15 am when i returned to bed and was afraid then to go to sleep in case i would oversleep. at first i was relieved to find no wide screen tv and no ghetto- blaster in the kitchen and was assuming that guests were to blame for the noise nuisance but i was in the long run no better than other hostels who take money from paying guests who want a place to sleep and use it to pursue their own agenda of partying all night long. i spent three nights here with my thumbs pressed against my ear lobes trying to attenuate the pain in my ears from the blasting - after three similar sleepless nights at 'Frank's' - and, it was so nice at first, and seemed so sensible, that i regret I could not recommend this hostel for non-smokers or those who want to get a night's sleep.close

Bit of a trek away from the Old Town. Had to negotiate what was pretty much a building site with cabling hanging down in the stairwell. No secure areas for possessions.

Riga is a must and "The House" hostel is by no doubt the most adorable place I have ever stayed at when abroad and it is certainly not the first experience with hostels. You feel so welcomed there and so at home, that it is hard to resist the temptation to stay longer in bed in the morning, reading a newspaper and drinking a cup of coffee. The old apartment situated in the very centre in Riga has been turned into a small journey itself with all the rooms in different styles and the living room wich is just outstandingly cozy and home like. old wooden floors, high ceilings, beautiful bathroom, the rooms itself and great music collection is spoiling, as well as all the small cozy&crazy bars in the surrounding area. Ever thought about going to Riga. DO IT and do it soon. And if you are looking for a special attitude in a perfect way, The House is absolutely a must. If you are interested in stories, you will hear them. Interested in music? Those people are ready to share everything they like. The whole stay was actually like excellent music with a sip of excellent calvados...close

Sit back and relax in one of the leather couches in the living room, plucking a guitar and listening to the many cds left there by past travelers. Every room has it's style and personal charm. When the site description says old aristocratic house, they are not exaggerating. You are greeted with lovely wood floors, "moulures" black and white photographs along the walls and even a "blacklight" night light in the corridor. Warning!: it is a little hard to find upon arrival, but don't hesitate to contact the hostel, they are very open and welcoming. They may even come meet you, if you are lost and wandering the streets of Riga. Talk about service. We were lucky to stay in "the House" when there were not many guests so we benifitted from special advice and help from Davis and Anna. Don't hesitate to ask them for tips about regions to explore in Latvia, they are passionate about their country and have good advice to give! A WONDERFUL stay. I recommend "the House" to those who will take care of a place decorated with taste and originality and who want to discover a home away from home.close
