As the most northerly city in the world, Iceland’s capital sees a number of extremes throughout the year, from twenty-two hours of daylight during the summer months to almost perpetual night when winter comes. Covering an area of around 106 square miles, the cosmopolitan city of Reykjavik is home to more than 120,000 people. And these people like to party! Reykjavik boasts an incredibly vital nightlife with bars, clubs and live music venues abounding across the city, so you should have no trouble finding something to occupy you each night. While you’re here, make sure to have a wander through the Old Town area and take in some of Reykjavik’s distinctive and brightly coloured buildings. Also, try to check out the National Museum of Iceland, the Culture House and the Hallgrimskirkja church. For stunning views of the city, head to the Perlan, a glass dome complete with viewing platforms and a restaurant that’s perched on top of five huge water tanks. A number of activities, from dog sledding to whale watching, can be undertaken in the city’s surrounding areas. Not to be missed are Reykjavik’s popular geothermal swimming pools. Eating out in this city can be expensive; however, a number of great tasting budget options are available, including the city’s ubiquitous hot dogs.
