It used to be a quiet seaside resort up until a few years ago, now maybe it’s not that quiet anymore and it’s become touristy, most of the posadas, restaurants, bars are not owned by Mexicans but by Europeans, still the sea is amazing (the pictures you take there will look like they’ve been enhanced somehow) and the Caribbean atmosphere is great. It’s in the state of Quintana Roo. The area of the Yucatan Peninsula stretching from Cancun to Tulum is known as “Riviera Maya” and its landscapes, scents, vegetation are amazing.
I really liked the big fruit plates (top, superb quality) that you can get for breakfast in the many open air bars. |

Playa del Carmen is very touristy but the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. There is a good mix of people from the cruise ships and other places. I liked Playa because of the day trips that are possible- Cozumel, Xel-Ha, Xcaret, etc. are all very close. I would definitely go back! |

Beach is really handy to the town and really nice, but the whole of this coast is much more expensive than the rest of Mexico - be prepared. |

Lively, vibrant, buzzing! With parasailing, snorkelling/diving tours, touristy stalls & shops, a fantastic variety of restaurants & bars and one of the most beautiful beaches I've EVER seen... Playa has smtg for every1! |

Playa compared to Cancun was much more fun and chilled and less pretentious. Good for backpackers of you stay off the beach a few blocks back. Yummy food!!! |

I did not like Playa del Carmen and Cancun with their too numerous buildings, cars and tourists. But I really fell in love with Tulum, its quietness, ecological cabanias hotels and environmental-friendly tourists |

PDC is ok if you want an experience which is neither Mexican or challenging. Its safe expensive (relatively) and quite boring. But if thats what you want!!! I did after a 10hr flight.! |

Unless you like millions of tourists from the cruise ships and inflated prices I'd pick another location (Tulum or Cozumel for eg) Mind you I have a young child so the beer drinking party scene is not for me. I think if that was your goal in travel then Playa is probably a good choice. |

Playa del Carmen really is what Lonely Planet says it is: a place full of hedonistic pleasures. The town is very fun, clean and new, however, the tourists outnumber the locals. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this town but do not think you are visiting an authentically Mexican place. I constantly had to remind myself that I wasn't in Disneyland. Everything is catered to tourists so everything is extremely expensive. The one major reason to come back to Playe del Carmen is the beach...it's so unbelieveably crystal clear and gorgeous. I have never had so much fun at a beach in my life. |
