moreThe Leaning Tower is Pisa’s most remarkable landmark. Its inclination is caused by poorly laid foundation and by the shifting soil on which it was built. It started leaning during its construction, which began in 1173 and lasted about 200 years.
In order to reduce its inclination and prevent the collapse of the Tower, works of corrected reconstruction and stabilization have been carried out several times.
The Tower is 56.70 mt. high on the highest side. The scientist Galileo Galilei used it to carry out experiments.
It is situated in “Campo dei Miracoli”, a big grassy square which also houses the Duomo (Cathedral), the Battistero (Baptistry) and the Camposanto (a monumental cemetery).close
