The YaMen Hostel is ideally located in the most historical and central area of PingYao, within a walking distance to all major attractions, and interesting spots of PingYao, In 1591 the city of Pingyao constructed what is now the Yamen Property in order to house the emperor, who was then planning a visit to the small town. The whole town was very excited to see the emperor, and the city built a guesthouse adjacent to the county governor's office especially for the emperor's visit. Unfortunately the emperor never came to Pingyao, but the construction of the guesthouse was completed none-the-less. Today the Yamen Property resides next to the most cherished building in the old town, the governor's office, and we treat all of our guests as if they were emperors! Had a blast at this hostel! Staff were really really friendly and helpful. Really friendly and laid-back atmosphere, and an amazing building as well.

Good location. Two major problems: no wi-fi in room or lobby (despite the description) and dirty and wet towels (had to get them changed three times).

Yamen hostel was an excellent place to stay, centrally located with clean beds. The weather was cold at the time, and the only issue was that the room was difficult to keep well heated.

Excellent hostel in a perfect location, super friendly and helpful staff that is always ready to help you out without trying to persuade you to join some overpriced tour. Probably the best price value I had in China, but unfortunately there were no headsets for skype.

Good value hostel for the price. The cafe has good food but is a little expensive. The staff were very helpful in arranging transport from Pingyao. Overall a good hostel.

Our first room was at the back of the complex with a wall shared with a museum so it was very noisy all day long! However the helpful staff moved us straight away to a much quieter room. It's a bit old but the main lounge/restaurant is a lovely place to sit with good food on offer too. We liked...

the staff was extremely friendly, especially Vivian. the wi-fi was strong, the food in the traveler's cafe was excellent, no problems with the train station pickup, and they were able to book a hard sleeper from pingyao to beijing without having to go to taiyuan first. excellent.

Beautiful hostel with traditional Chinese courtyards, spacious rooms, located at a main tourist strip in Pingyao. Value for money. Can't recommend the menu though. And don't let the staff arrange your next sleepover; the price turned out to be much higher on arrival and the promised pick up...

Rooms were very clean, and the only thing I could suggest is that they organize some tours, we mostly hung around town seeing the old buildings and window shopping. The 120+ Yuan for the historical sites seemed a bit much, and there´s plenty you can see on your own, we ran into a local who showed us around actually, Mr.Lu, he´ll find you.close

It consisted of old courtyard-style buildings which were very charming and especially beautiful at night. I thought the staff were quite friendly, sometimes going out of their way to help us. They were especially enthusiastic when they discovered that we could speak a little Chinese. Everything went smoothly, from the train station pick-up, to directing us to the long distance bus station. I was even surprised at the quality of their Western food. I've been living in Beijing for the past 7 months and Western food here is relatively expensive and sometimes not much to write home about. However, not only was the food at the Yamen Hostel really tasty, it was also reasonably priced. My friends and I ate the majority of our meals there (I'm afraid my opinion of Shanxi cuisine is not quite as high...I can get better Shanxi food in Beijing...). The location of the hostel is perfect, practically in the centre of the old city.close

Make sure you get a key (though I didn't for the first day and nothing was stolen), but aside from that the hostel was great. The location is great and the staff very friendly. The architecture is genuinely Ming Dynasty. I'm sure it's cold in the winter, but this is one of the best hostels...
