Phuket is a island may will love but that is only becasue they want to drink, see ping pong and be seen at the beach. There are much nicer beaches in the world and you will not get annoyed as much by touters. Also it is just as expensive as being in a place such as Australia where you can find whatever fun you want.

disappointing overall. Beaches were expensive. Tuk tuk drivers and tailors make you crazy.

There are so many beaches/islands around Phuket, each with their own unique features. Some has better sceneries (eg Bangtao, Karon), some are better for watersports (eg Phiphi), some are famous for shopping/night activities (eg Patong) and some offer pure serenity (eg Kamala)

Beware that this place stinks of sewerage, especially down the main street for nightclubs and pubs at night.

very quaint little town. if you are in the phuket area and want to see how the locals live when they are not selling things to tourists, go to phuket town. good for culture, but not too much to do.

One piece of advice before you go to Phuket: stay away from Patong! It is seedy, full of package holidays and bloody hard to find somewhere to stay for under 1000 baht a night. If you're going to Phuket I recommend you to go to Karon or Kata instead (10km down road) much quieter and prettier.

patong is nice... for one night!! definately an experience on bangle street, worth a look & taste some over priced beers/cocktails... certainly entertaining. beach is fab, the nicest in phuket, great to walk on. weather, v hot (march). good massages, do NOT get waxing!!! if you go here, please go to KATA beach & district... much more upper class & good shopping.

I was in Phuket in SEP, which was the low season for tourism. Things are not as cheap as I expected, especially transportation. There are no tuk-tuks like in Bangkok, and the taxis/songthews are a little pricey. Patong beach seems to be the best place for shopping and meeting people.

Patong on Phuket is like Benedorm, but smaller and somehow not as nice. I spent most of the week inside a bar watching the rain, happy days.

I really enjoyed my stay in phuket although obviously it being the back of the rainy season i did get a few bad days. the beaches are great though especially patong and kata. patong is the more lively are and there seems to be pleanty going on there. kata is alot quieter but very beautiful.

Didn't travel arund much, but the area of Karon, where we were based was fantastic. Lots going on, and all on your front doorstep. Markets are a must for the thrifty shoppers! Beaches are heavenly. Didn't find much going on in the nightlife department, but didn't look too hard!

phuket is a cool place to chill out and swim in the sea. our hostel was a bit of down which i liked as it was more cultural. when we were there it was rainy season and we did get caught in some storms-onse storm actually caused part of the roof of our hostel to cave in! phuket is really nothing more than a sea side town-but a great place to get boats to the islands.

Phuket was beautiful but very touristy, not for us at all. We stayed between Kata and KAron beach, lovely beaches and quiet but still with enough life going on. As for Patong Beach, never, never will I visit this place again, words cannot discribe how we felt, within 2 minutes of getting there we wanted to leave, it was pressure buying the whole time be it for massage, a suit to be made, tuk-tuk, taxi, girly bars, awful, hated it. As for lying on the beach, it was looky, looky men/women asking all the time. Dont go there if you want a peaceful holiday. We were glad to leave this place.

Great place for chilling out but head inland away from the beaches if you want to see what Phuket is about - becoming more westernised and runs the risk of ruining its reputation.

To many people hassling you for money as soon as you leave the front door, Can't relax at any stage cos people trying to sell you stuff! But the t-shirt saying "I dont want a Suit, Tuk Tuk or a F*&%@#g Massage thank you very much" its writin in thai on the front and it saves you a lot of bother! Overall verdict! Couldn't wait to leave!

phuket is a nice place if you don't plan on doing too much. theres some good shopping and markets. food is good enough. Anna's is a great thai restaurant on ranong rd. its easy to get around and there doesn't seem to be too much hassle for tuk tuks or anything else. buses go to the beaches every half hour until 4.30 and last one back i think is at 4.30 as well. if you're looking for sun sea sand, go to the beaches, if you're looking for city/town living then go to phuket

Girlie bar scene dominates streets of patong - if you don't like this scene - don't stay there! Beaches are nice but if it's nightlife you're after that not of girlie bar kind phuket really doen't have much to offer.

Phuket is great. definitely go scuba diving at phi phi or snorkeling there. phi phi is also great too. try the papaya pot pot or som tam. it's this amazing papaya salad, so good. the water is clear and nice and refreshing against the hot sun. i'd save the shopping for bangkok, but just enjoy phuket and relax and make friends with all of the other backpackers there.

Although phuket is still cheap, it it one of the more expensive cities in thailand. Packed out with tourists. Young tourists are friendly and talkative. Older ones dont care to make any contact with you at all. Lots of working girls, they are nice when they realise your not competition (being a girl). Ladyboys are fun, really nice and chatty. Shopping is good, better in Bangkok though.

Patong beach is back from the tsunami wreck! It is as partying as before. The dive sites on Kho Phi Phi is up there with the best! The only downside, cost are slightly higher than before (surely someone has to pay for the costs of rebuilding). I will be back again!

Patong is touristy but its nice for a few days lots of things to buy and do, beach is nice, and when you get overwhelmed by consumption you can move to a quierter spot which I think you will appreciate more having been here !

very touristy, which kind of sells a faulse insight into thailand...they seem to see all white skin as equally wealthy....the choice of accomodation&activities is very well set up for all budgets, lengths of stay etc...4 days is more than enough, wish i hadve explored other areas of thailand aswell to get the true picture

What a beautiful place, which can be done on the cheap or live it up. Getting around is so easy. I booked my accommodation as I arrived in each place and it pays to go and look at each room before you pay - you make a deal.

oh, unless you are into the whole \"I love package tours, I go on holidays so I can eat the same food I eat at home, can\'t stand to be more than 5 minutes from a McDonalds, my idea of culture shock is to buy a crappy souvenir from someone who doesn\'t speak fluent English, I still forget sometimes that not everyone in the world accepts pounds, or dollars, will someone please get me a cup of tea\" thing then don\'t bother. Go to Costa del Sol, or Cancun, or Sufers Paradise or whatever vapid soulless tourist trap is nearest to home. This may have been a beautiful place once but it has been raped by tourism.

Quite simply the best place i have ever been to. If your single and want to experience fun times then you cant beat bangle road. Patong beach is really good, forget the chav european places like ibiza, malia, tenreife etc, phuket is just the place for the beach, the booze, and the women!
