This little bistro style restaurant regularly gets voted the top in its category in the 1st arrondissement by people in the know - those that live there. I can see why. The place is always buzzing with couples, business types and families. I can see why. The place is always buzzing with couples, business types and families. It is hardly surprising, because the food is excellent. Very traditional French, often regional specialities, enormous portions (ask the size of the starter before you order it, otherwise you'll never get through the main course!). The house wines are very pleasant although the restaurant has a very good selection of other bottled wines to choose from. There are a few tables outside in good weather but inside has atmosphere too, with its brightly painted yellow walls, the big blackboards they write the menus on, the crowded wooden tables, the lovely old bar and the general hustle and bustle. The waiting staff are also a treat - very pleasant and friendly and a smile that really seems genuine - so rare these days. I can think of a few waiters and waitresses that could do with being trained in the art of hospitality by the staff in Au Vieuw Comptoir... Warmly recommended.close
