See the temple complex, the mausoleum (separate ticket but worth the hike up the stairs just for the views and the solitude). Also go see the imperial palace - likely have the place to yourself and the palace is a really nice way to experience imperial life. The garden outside is nice for a stroll as well but save it for the end.close

I decided to stay for two reasons 1) I wanted a break from the frenetic pace of Tokyo and it's neon madness and 2) I wanted to take my time enjoying the amazing shrine complex. As a plus I was able to enjoy an Onsen set in the woodland, which at night was something special.close

You can probably see all the sights in about half a day, and having arrived the day before, we did find ourselves hanging around a lot on the second day. The temples and the scenery were breathtaking. There are a lot of shops, mostly tourist orientated, but reasonably priced. It was three train journeys to get there from Shinjuka station, but well worth the trek. Gave us time to relax before heading back to the city.close

1It is the best place we stayed in Japan. the house is very well equipped and comfortable. The owners are very nice, helpful and hospitable. One rainy evening we were late coming back from the mountains, when we got out from the bus the lady was waiting for us in her car at the bus stop, though...

Nikko Park Lodge 85%
Nice hostel with very good atmosphere and friendly staff. In the evening most guests have dinner together and hang around since there is nothing much to do in town anyway. I stayed in the dorm which was a bit humid.

Nikko Inn 80%
Wasn't quite what we were expecting, but a lot of character in the building we stayed in. It was described as a farm stay, we were in a rural village by a train line in a free standing old style house. Overall very good! But could be described better to reduce surprises guests.
