That said, it is a backpacker's - don't expect it to be really clean, to get fresh towels or any kind of maid service while you're there (even if you stay for days). No alcohol is allowed - and if you're caught they toss you out without a refund - but the sweet smell of cannibis is floating in the hallways. Our room was ensuite on the 8th floor with a spectacular view of the city - really spectacular. Don't try to take a shower after 8am though, because all the hot water will be gone. And definitely bring earplugs if you need to go to sleep before 2 am and you're going to be there on Thurs, Fri, or Saturday. The music from the basement is so incredibly loud that it almost shakes the room ( on the 8th floor!!) - and it goes on into the wee hours. The continental breakfast is so-so, but if you want to fill up on rather tasteless cereal, toast, canned fruit, and coffee it's at least cheap ($9).close

Key to room never worked after several times of asked it to be changed!Woman on reception when we first arrived was very rude!!! Club downstairs was a little noisy but was on floor 3 so the higher up you are should be better.

Quite a nice little extra earner for them by the looks of the number of people who had suffered the same thing. The staff on reception were rude about it and very unhelpful. And when I wrote to the manager I never received a reply. I will never book to stay in a base backpackers again and would also advise anyone else not to .close

Kitchen was a bit shocking. Hardly any cuttlery and nobody was washing up much. Ending up having to butter my bread with a spoon in a bowl.

She would wedge the rubbish bin in the doorway if she had to go in and out of the room while everyone was sleeping, and it was awkward having to wake her up to open the drawer under the bed to get my things. Everyone knows these things are rampant at base, i've not seen it as prevalent anywhere else I've stayed. I don't see the point in having a big keycard sytem when the hostel is apparently cool with people just coming in sleeping in the building. Whether they're friends of other travellers or not. If they did something or something ended up stolen, you wouldn't even have their details to be able to track them. It's pretty worrying.close

On arrival, they had no reference to the online booking I hasd made being I had to move rooms during my 2 night stay, which involved checking out and not being able to check in til after 1pm. They did provide a free breakfast each day so it wasn't that bad. However, after the first night I awoke to find my body covered in over 100 (trust me I counted) flea or bed mite bites. Avoid this place like the plague. Note: I have stayed in other Base hostel and they were fine.close

For your reference. The room was obviously not vaccumed each day, or even when most of the occupants had left (I was the only one left in a 4 share), and so the floor got progressively filthier. It was unclear whether the sheets were changed between visitors. That kind of disturbed me. The staff were massively impatient, except for the manager, who actually seemed like she enjoyed what she was doing. There's not enough communal hang out space where people can mix. The sun room on the 5th floor is pointless. The kitchen was too stark. The bar was hopelessly loud for talking. The room was REALLY noisy!!! Even with window and vent closed, it was way too loud -- until like 3:30am on a Wed night is just unacceptable. Most of the noise came from the basement bar, which is even more unacceptable. Have a fixed time for last call and send people to bed. The handicap bathroom on the 5th floor -- I don't think the vent works. That thing was always steamy to the point where you couldn't breathe. I propped the door open when I wasn't actually undressed. And the sink is backed up.close
