This was the main entry point for immigrants entering the United States from January 1, 1892 until November 12, 1954. It is believed that around 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island during its lifetime. Now it is a museum.

Being from Ireland, a visit to Ellis Island was always going to be very poignant. After all, There is a strong possibility that some of my ancestors may have landed here from a famine ship seeking a new life in the land of opportunity. The museum itself, which is fantastic and moving is housed in the actual building these immigrants would have passed through, although it was rebuilt after a fire. I got the guided tour while i was there and was well worth it. It lasts 3 hours and the guide was fantastic. Full of little stories. I got the return ferry trip to the island from battery park and I think it was about €8 or so ... but these ferries are very well advertised in hotels/tourist offices etc. The only complaint I would have is there are very basic facilities on the island, toilets/ tiny snack bar, seating. Overall however, a fantastic tour and the views of herself on the way over are spectacularclose
