New York guide

New York is just like it is in the movies. Horns whine constantly from yellow cabs, hot dog vendors adorn every street corner and fading wisps of steam can be seen trailing from every second manhole. Even though it is just like it is in the movies, nothing can prepare you for your first visit. Walking around Times Square for the first time is extremely surreal because, for a split second, it seems like you are in one of those movies. But it isn't all towering skyscrapers and busy sidewalks. The East and West Villages are surprisingly low-rise, while Chinatown, Little Italy and Soho are close-knit communities where you will find many of the best restaurants in the city. Ironically, one of its best features is that there is too much to see and do - within hours you will be planning your second journey.

It's been a while since I've been in New York. It was pre-9/11 so I'm sure it has changed somewhat but the places I remember and enjoyed are still there. My favourite place was a little icecream parlour called Serendipity 3 which my NY friend Rachel brought me to. I plan to go back this year and I'm really looking forward to it. I stayed in Fitzpatricks Hotel Manhattan which was pretty plush but this time I'll be looking for cheaper accomodation.close

The bad points are they don\'t have wifi at all , your best bet is to stand outside and hope to catch a signal from next door and there is not much of a common room to meet other travellers which for a solo traveller can be quite boring!! location is good it\'s easy to get around as the subway is close by and this part of harlem is vvery safe but still felt strange going through it after a night out. It\'s not the best but it\'s not the worst!close

It has been a nightmare from the arrival. The beds are crap, so so old and noisy...the rooms are very small to fit 8 persons. If you are lucky you can get some hot water in the shower. We saw some mouse in the living room/entrance. No equipment in the kitchen (cup, cuttelery, plates). You have to pay to access internet (except if you have your own laptop). I also think the lounge is too small to fit so many persons. However, the location is really good, closed to Starbucks to have breakfast on the morning, to corner shops and tube station (direct to Times Square). close

Okay that could be a bit of a generalisation but honestly, I dont think I could ever get bored with New York. Christmas is definately one of the best times to visit, the shop windows and shop fronts are really pretty and covered with lights. If you can handle the crowds its worth visiting the Rockerfeller Centre and maybe the ice rink, although the Wollman Rink in Central park is my favourite, if you go at night you have a great view of the NY Skyline. There are so many areas to go out at night you would be spoiled for choice! We went to the Meatpacking District which is full or really cool bars and clubs. You could also go down to Greenwich Village or Soho for a more chilled out atmosphere. If you like shopping, its everywhere. If you dont however the bus tour is really worthwhile and good value for money if you hop on and hop off. The Metropolitan Museum is well worth a visit, its well laid out and you can get around most things in a couple of hours, it also has something for everyone. You will never see everything in one visit, so plan a few and dont try and do too much at one!close

If you want to treat yourself on your visit to NY, this is the place to stay. Located in the centre of it all Times Square. On this occasion I did get to stay here but that doesn't matter as you can still experience the fantastic revolving roof bar and restaurant. This is the perfect place to...

Excellent value for money, especially in New York. Great location, but not too noisy. Not far from the Village Pourhouse, which was the best pub or club I visited in the US.

Good accomadation at a reasonable price. Never a problem with bathrooms, wich where always kept clean. Note that there's a 14% tax, in addition to the price. It says on the bottom of this page, but I didn't notice it until I had to pay. But still allover a nice experience.
