The majority poor people were living in this city. Why people like to define the other groups with the income they have? Weird. The people in New Orleans are very friendly and nice thou heard there are lots of criminals and so on. Lived there for a year and enjoyed going out with friends every week to the wonderful restaurant on the St.Charles Ave called TOKYO BISTRO!!!!!! The best restaurant in TOWN if you love Japanese food!!! The chef loves me and always makes the Simon Skin BBQ free of charge when he saw me enter the place. Had many good partying times there with my lovely old gangs. Mardi Gras was crazy. The boys are falling into taking photos with the topless women in the French Quarter. We, girls have to go to the RED Room Club to dancing with the other cute guys...why not? ^^ W Hotel is a chill out place especially the bar or lounge area - Library Bar. Harrah's Casino is just right beside. Tons of Asian people gamble over there, included me and Cal. It was fun to play the Black Jack and got the feeling for winning the money. It is possible to drive 18 hours from New Orleans back to New York...haha...Eric did a great job on that day. Shops suck in New Orleans, not much to offer. I ended up to go to Banana Republic with Ariel every week to check out the new item. Boring! Love the Rugby season and saw so many exciting people coming into town.close

What I found was a city that is trying hard to return to its former glory. There was a lot of construction and repairs going on in the downtown business district and the tourist areas. This occassionally made travel slow through parts of the city. Repairs were going on elsewhere in the parts of the cities I saw, but the rate appeared slower and in some cases seemed to have ground to a halt. The most important thing to remember when travelling to New Orleans is not how fast you can get around the city, but what you can see and learn along the way. Take the time to wait the extra time for a street car, bus or a shuttle ride from the airport. I saw and heard a lot of interesting things, because I took the time to wait and listen.close

New Orleans is an amazing city, tons of live music. The public transportation sucks, doesn't run very often, no trip planner, and the signs are unmarked, but it's pretty easy to get around if you rent a car, unfortunately the car rentals are more expensive than anywhere I've ever...more New Orleans is an amazing city, tons of live music. But outside of that, the place is as amazing and fun as it is scary and sad. Highlights.. the music.. oh the music. Nowhere else I've ever been can you find at least a dozen choices for live music. The culture is alive, though on rocky ground. I saw the most glorious partying and parading side by side with homeless beggars and violent crime. Somehow the band plays on. If you stay long enough you will fall in love and despise it all at once. In the end I found myself whistling Louis Armstrong on a daily basis. The spirit is alive and needs to be appreciated.close

You can do it on a cheap budget, though it's a bit more difficult, especially if you're sticking mainly to the French Quarter, but there IS cheap food to be found, so fear not. It's a legendary party town, but there are also wonderful historical places to visit (like the Gallier House and the River Road plantations). It's not exactly a kid friendly place to visit; they'll probably end up bored before the end of the day. Otherwise, it's absolutely fabulous.close

New Orleans is a special city with amazing music and wonderfully warm Southerners. We have a lot to learn from the expression "Steel Magnolia" these people make it through hurricanes just about every year, and a lot more (like gov. stuff) and are still the genuine down to earth people I really appreciate. Some very "dicey", shadey sides to the city, so check where you are going before you go there. Off the beaten path can be the "beating path". Be careful. French quarter is fine! Have a blast in the big sleazy! I mean the big easy!close

Having lived in the city until Katrina, and trying to move back now, I was able to compare the conditions both before and after. The city's a bit smaller in population now, and some non-tourist areas are still torn up, but the tourist sections are beautiful, clean, safe, and open for business. The city really needs the tourism, and everything's great, so come on back!!!close

the room was dirty, but in mid-September I had a dorm room to myself because of low occupancy. The staff were very friendly as per Southern style, and they were ok with my after midnight arrival. The bistro was excellent - $3 for a full Southern breakfast! Overall the place had great charm and...

St. Vincent's was beautiful. We weren't in NOLA for the room, and it had everything we needed. At night there were bugs, but they don't seem to venture anywhere near the bed. There were a few creepy men, but that's the case anywhere. I wouldn't walk around the nearby neighborhoods at night,...

Dina and Daniel (who manage the hostel) are absolutely wonderful people who make the experience feel cozy, welcome and home-like. The location (although a bit dodgy at times) is awesome, being just a few blocks from the quarter.

Totally redone and the food is wonderful. Attentive service and very friendly staff make your visit special. Although they lost a great deal of their wines, they have many choices available by glass or bottle.
