The staff really need to improve on their English. I have to make 3 phone call before they can understand me to send a shuttle to pick me up at the station. Location is scenic. But too far from station.

The Japanese style rooms are gorgeous and enormous (by Japanese standards!). It's location outside of the main towns was not a problem as the hotel offers a shuttle bus every hour. An affordable luxury.

The hotel was hidden at one corner of the Kawaguchi lake thus made it very inaccessible. If you need to leave the hotel very early in the morning(bef 10am), you have to get a cab(ard 2700 yen). Worst of all, dinner at the restaurant must be prebook. Not flexible.

However, none of these can be reserved via Internet, but the hotel takes reservation only by Internet. Do I need to point out the contradiction? Location: the place is really nice but it is rather far from the station. Yes, the hotel offers transfers from and to the train station but what they don't mention is that they choose if they want to do it or not, especially in the morning. Our train was at 8:00 but the transfer was at 10:10... so we had to take a bus (one every three hours, no kidding). So even with a lovely location like this, the transfer thing made us forget all about it. Staff: Japan is a lovely country, with lovely people, especially in hotels. Except at Ashiwada hotel. Only one member of staff can speak english and you have the feeling you ennoy him a lot every time you dare asking a question. It is so unusual in Japan, that it was very striking. Fun: how can a stay be fun when the staff is not? Cleanliness: if you have the opportunity (:-)) to stay in room 502, please pay attention to the nice stains on the floor (not mentionning the cigarette burns) and on the covers... Restaurant: one very nice feature (maybe the only one) of the hotel, we were delighted by the dinner offered (12 dishes) and the quality of the products.close

Beautiful location by the lake but possibly inconvenient for guests without a car since the bus service is irregular. We had an extremely spacious and well-appointed triple room.

The young man at the front desk who was also the waiter, shuttle bus driver and spoke very good English was very helpful and we would be happy to provide a reference for him should he wish to move from such a beautiful location.

There was a mix up with my reservation and to compensate for this they gave me the most deluxe room in the hotel for no extra charge. Plus the onsen experience here is fantastic. Id recommend the Ashiwada hotel to anyone intending to visit the Mount Fuji region. A word of warning though: the off-peak season is probably best - I imagine the place is brimming with tourists in the summer.close

I'm very impressive for the kindness of hotel reception staff. I stayed at Ashiwada on November 9,2005 and checked out at 7.00 a.m.(November 10). Thank you very much again.

Staff is especially courteous, I sincerely appreciate the staff who waited for my family at Kawaguchiko Station for almost 1 hour as I had difficulties travelling from Nagoya to there. As the hotel restaurant was closed, he even took us to the takeaway sushi restaurant to buy our dinner, delicious and not expensive. The staff who sent us back to the station was equally helpful to arrange for us to buy tickets to Mt.Fuji. Both speak good English. The room was impeccably furnished as Japanese style room. My children enjoyed the hotel thoroughly and left with a deep impression of Japanese culture. Front desk staff was very polite and helpful. The only problem was as we were the only staying guest, the restaurant was closed, so we missed out on a good traditinal Japanese style dinner and breakfast! The only tiny flaw in an excellent hotel! I strongly recommend to anyone who wants a very scenic and serene location at the foot of Mt.Fuji! Our sincere thank you and appreciation to all the excellent and helpfull staff. I certainly hope I can return in some time to come.close

The western rooms aren't worth the money. Don't book this unless you have a car, the place is very remote. The advertised english speaking capabilities of the staff are hardly evident, their English isn't any better than that of most hotels in Japan. Also, don't expect to enjoy the advertised restaurant after arriving at the hotel, they require a reservation in advance. Only way you can get food is delivery service.close

But the staff treated us more like an inconvience than anything else. We showed up at the train station at 1:00pm and called the hotel. They told us the shuttle doesn't run until 2:00 pm. So we had to sit at the train station for an hour, and we were the only people they had to pick up. Then we wanted to go back to the train station the next day to catch a bus going towards Nagoya, there was a direct bus that left at 10 am. But their shuttle only ran one time in the morning, at 10:30 am. So we had to take a later bus and exchange. Actually, they did send the shuttle back to the station 15 minutes early, but still too late for our original bus. And the only reason the sent it early was because a bunch of Japanese people were gathering at the hotel to clean up the highway and the mountain. They kept looking at us while we waited for the shuttle, and, I guess, said something to the staff, because they suddenly were really anxious for us to leave. I loved the view and the accomodations, but there's nothing nearby. You can't really choose to eat at another resturant because there really aren't any others around. So you have to eat at their resturant at 3,000 yen a person. Even though they had English staff, I feel, over all, the hotel was a bit pricey and snobby for my taste. I'd choose different hotel next time.close

Hotel is out of town. They offer a shuttle service but last one is at 5pm so means dining in town or a late return from Fuji involves a taxi ride adding another A$10-$15 to your daily expenses

This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The staff was amazing and went above and beyond what we expected. We enjoyed the hotel and the area so much that we stayed an unexpected day!
