  “ I am just back a few weeks from Marrakech. I spent a total of 4 nights there (taking in a day trip to Imlil in the High Atlas mountains). I must say that I found the city a little underwhelming. It lacked the exotic feel that I thought it would/should have. This is probably due to the… more increased tourism that has taken hold here. While there are a few interesting sites to see, there are no special sites, no sites with a Wow factor. They are all a little underwhelming. The main square Jemma El Fna is disapointing. Its a paved over square with surrounding buildings that lack any character or architectural beauty. There is the odd snake charmer here and there but quite frankly, the snakes look bored out of their minds. There are men with monkeys doing tricks but it is all a little too tacky, put on for the tourists sake. The place was packed full with tourists. I do recommend having a freshly squeezed glass of orange which cost about 10 diraham from the many orange vendors in the square. The medina is just like any other medina, once you have seen one you have seen them all. You are constantly plagued by teenage boys wanting to know if you need a Riad (accomodation for the night) and offering to bring you to one at no charge. Don't believe them, they always wanclose

We were beseiged by beggars old, young and not so young demanding money. It was impossible to consult our map without soomeone (maninly… more youngmen) insisting on leading us to where we were going despite our protestations, and then demanding money. As a photographer it was impossible for me to take photos without someone demanding payment, even for taking a photo of their donkey. On the few occasions I did give someone money in order to take their photo I was told it was not sufficient. We could not even eat some fruit in a local park without being pestered by children and young men for our food. The souvenirs were good quality and hand made in Morocco but it wasn't possible to browse or look at the items without being pestered to buy and to be given a good price. Indeed I quickly learnt not to point at objects or look to closely as this encouraged attention. Les Jardins Majorelle were lovely and the Medersa very interesting. However, the other historic sites were dirty, broken and without signs. Marrakech was an experience but it is not somewhere I would recommend or return to in a hurry.close

  “ Great hostal would stay here again. Only problem was trying to get there. I arrived at night and some of the streets dont have lights especially after the stores close so it was scary. The hostal is beautiful and very clean. Everyone there was nice and helpful and the breakfast is really good.

  “ We loved Marrakech.You need patience and humour to cope with the insistent attempts to sell you all manner of goods...but handled properly, this can be great fun and people are always happy and smiling... be courteous and keep smiling....Try the centre artisanal for purchases if you want… more fixed prices and not too much hard selling! We would recommend the textile stall organised by a co-operative for women with disabilities...friendly people with excellent products. A trip out to the Ourika valley was something special... but... again...expect a good many retail opportunities even half way up a mountain!close

The owner, Hassan, is the most helpful and generous person that will bend over backwards in order to make sure you are getting everything you deserve not… more only from his services, but from Marrakech as a city.   “ Marrakech is not for the faint hearted. It isn\'t for those that want a peaceful, relaxing holiday, it is not for those that are not prepared to get involved in \'local\' activities. It is very definitely for those that like to mix with the locals, experience things outside… more the cultural norm, and go shopping! The main square in the Medina is just full of culture - snake charmers, acrobats, story tellers, etc. and these are here largely for the locals, not the tourists. The market is hassley, but again, full of charm and culture and interesting back alleys. The food is wonderful, if you like to eat locally and cheaply. Alcohol is, understandably, hard to find except at a couple of posh bars. We enjoyed ourselves and came away feeling like we had \'experienced\' and not just \'seen\' a part of Morocco that is encompassing tourism and traditionalism very effectively. A visit of about 2-3 days is enough, but they will be a very memorable 2-3 days - with the proviso that you are prepared to mix with local culture and eat local food.close
