I'm not long back from Madrid. The gentleman that works/manages this restaurant is the single most helpful man I have ever encountered. He is well able to share a laugh and go out of his way to prepare the tasty food exactly how I liked it. Not only would I return ... I will return.

Classic Spanish breakfast, coffee served in glass, crispy toast with olive oil and tomato, tattooed friendly staff!

White wooden kind of Scandinavian looking interior. We went for lunch but were recommended to come for dinner as well. Downstairs is good atmosphere and the stairs coming down in the middle gives the big room a bit smaller.

Try the challenging but soooo tasty cold tomato soup with vanilla ice cream and I promise a gastronomic experience. The fruit carpaccio for dessert was ok, but nothing extraordinary.

Sunday lunch place for friends and funky families. Bar like setting with old signs on the walls and wooden tables. Eat fried potatoes with your choice of meat, sea food or vegetables, have a glass of beer and top up with a toast. Relaxed and simple!

This outstanding little bar/restaurant is an excellent choice for those who wish to sample the Basque food, considered by many to be Spain's equivalent of the French haute cuisine. We liked everything we tried here, and we tried a lot.

To give a few examples: baked onions stuffed with fresh goat's cheese and jamón, blood pudding served with baked apple, perhaps the best anchovies we have ever tried, coated in virgin olive oil and Txacolí (a basque white wine), cod souffle... to mention a few possibilities.

This place serves real Spanish food - home made! Don't miss Bocata de calamares or squid sandwich. I know it sounds funny if you are not Spanish but you have to try it! Other dishes that you can taste are: tortilla de patatas, or Spanish omelette, patatas bravas, chorizo sandwich. It is located in a little street between Plaza Mayor and San Miguel Market

Toa is a great sushi bar (which are hard to find) The surroundings are brilliant and utterly oriental. The only complaint i have is the food is just so overpriced,(you can when you pretty much have a monopoly) but it is beautiful

Be on time for a table in this cosy place with a diverse audience. The starters and mains are absolutely great, but do save space for the desserts. We had coconut and curry mousse and white chocolate soup - completely divine and a perfect ending on a dinner. Staff is attentive and very friendly and fun. They even told me how to make that mousse and I wish I could remember...

This is to tapas what mcdonalds is to burgers. everywhere in Madrid you cannot miss the bright orange signs with a cows head. Its called after the dish patatas bravas which are basically chips with an unbearable hot paprika based sauce on top of them.

A great traditional place to taste the world-renowned Spanish hams and mingle with locals!

Perhaps the best known of Madrid's chocolate con churros (fried pastry snack dipped in chocolate) vendors. You can stop by in the evening for one of these calorific bombs, but its main market is clubbers with the munchies pouring out of the city's nearby dance palaces.

Like any decent paella restaurant, you need two people to make an order but once that requirement is met, you've plenty of choice. The typical Valencia paella is cooked with beans and chicken but there are also plenty of seafood varieties on offer. Unfortunately i ordered a paella with chicken in it by accident - dont do chicken so i wasnt a happy camper. Also thought this was a bit touristy.

This is a lively tapas bar on the best street in Madrid (in my opinion). You can stand at the bar and have a drink or sit at a table and have some food. The tapas are delicious as is the vino. We had to wait a while for a table but it was worth it!

Of all Madrid's tapas bars, Casa Alberto is probably its best known. Portions of tapas such as chorizo and sun-dried tomatoes are around €3 a pop. They have lovely wine also and it's really rustic. Great location too in the centre of Madrid.

This is a dark place with brown interiors, the bar has plenty of wine displayed. We went here for breakfast, and the toast was just great. Kind of slow staff, but friendly. When I passed by later on at night, the place was full of people having dinner outside.

Chocolateria San Gines is tucked away up a sidestreet but is surely one of Madrid's most popular cafe. There is only one thing to order when visiting this establishment and that is the chocolate con churros. Thick hot chooolate accompanied by strips of deep fried doughnuts. Dunk them into the hot chocolate for a rich rewarding treat. Guaranteed to act as a pick-me-up after a day slogging through the streets of Madrid, or after a night on the town.

We tried to visit this restaurant for dinner one evening but it was packed to the rafters so we returned for a menu del dia lunch the following day. The menu was unexciting, although it was very good value and definitely filled us up for the day. The restaurant interior is lovely and is decorated in a white scandinavian beachhouse style. I just felt that it didn't live up to expectations

Cool little cafe in the center of Madrid. Great coffee, natural juices, homemade soups, healthy salads, sandwiches and even baked Potatoes! In a nice relaxed friendly environment. You can also order to take away, which is quite a new thing in Madrid!

Great place to eat the beloved spanish jamon, bocadillos and callamares. They also have plates with pork or chicken. The staff is also very nice (even if you don't speak a word of Spanish) and all this for a cheap price.

This is a great tapas bar in La Latina. They don't take reservations so get there early! They do traditional tapas with a twist. Try the risotto with prawns, the hamburgers and the pintxo de solomillo which is to die for. The salads are also great for sharing. As its quite difficult to get a table we had to get there early as there were 17 people in our group but we managed to get a table and everyone really enjoyed the food. Its reasonable too. It worked out at €35 a head and that included a lot of beer and wine. This place gets really busy later and the bar was packed. Unfortunately, one of the girls in our group had her bag robbed while we were there by a couple who had been sitting next to her. I know this could happen anywhere but it did affect our mood somewhat. Not the restaurants fault though and we couldn't fault the food or the great staff!
