If in Lisbon, be sure to attend a Fado session. This Portuguese music genre is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics. It is a kind of longing, and conveys a complex mixture of mainly nostalgia, but also sadness, pain, happiness and love. Really unmissable!

Lisbon is a pretty small capital but is big on culture and things to do. Situated on the River Tagus. The historic centre of Lisbon is built on seven hills! Locals are friendly and come from all over the world, influencing the city’s culture. One of Lisbon’s specialities is fresh seafood and other cuisines served in many of the city’s restaurants include Brazilian and African dishes. Menus seem to be quite varied so everyone will find something to fill them. Shopping is good in this small city. There are a variety of different shops and several shopping centres. Great markerts also for picking up a bargain or two! Buses, trams and an underground metro system make up Lisbon’s public transport system. All are efficient but i found the metro the quickest way to get around the city. Nice cultured and charming city!

This oceanarium is definitely a place for kids, no matter what age! Located in the 'new' area of Lisbon along the river front. We spent about an hour in here looking at every type of fish and even the odd otter. Its worth a visit more so because of it's location. Take a wander down the river front, grab a coffee or take a trip on the cable cars. Get to the Oceanario early though before it gets too crowded and impossible to see anything in comfort.

The former site of Expo' 98 is now a bustling area for shops, museums, waterfront activities, hotels, houses and much much more. Before Expo' 98 the area was the site of a dis-used oil refinery and now it's an environmentally friendly public area. The Vasco da Gama shopping center is a large shopping complex inside an amazing building, flanking it are two 25 story buildings that resemble ships and fits in with the whole areas "nautical" theme. Parque das Nações has Portugal's largest arena where a wide range of activities happen on a nightly basis from concerts to shows. There are a wide range of museums, including The National Museum, Aquarium of Portugal, Science museum and are places for regular exhibitions. A multitude of restaurants line certain areas of the place with one of the biggest ranges of food's from Chinese to Portuguese and from Irish to Mexican. Parque das Nações prices vary from cheap to all out flaunting of money to fit anyones choice. The nightlife is another aspect that makes this area so special in Lisbon.

Unless you are in the full of your health, don't even attempt to walk to this castle as it's a steep uphill climb all the way. So get a bus or taxi. The only thing really worth seeing here is the view which is remarkable. Other than that, it is a bit of a tourist trap!

Well, I knew I was getting old when the thoughts of parking my bum on a comfy bus seat to view the city was preferable to walking around with a map under the blazing sun (ok, so slight exaggeration- but it was hot!) Anyway, this company operate 2 city tours, one for the old sites of the city and the other for the new sites of the city, such as the Oceanarium. We took the old tour and liked it, purely because it gave us an idea of the layout of the city and of things we wanted to see. It is a hop-on/ hop-off tour like most European cities have and your ticket is valid for the day. So if you prefer a cool breeze and no excercise to pounding the streets in an aimless fashion, this is for you!

Aim to go here either early in the morning and then come back in the evening, or head here in the late afternoon and stay til nightfall and you will see the old part of the city transform from a relaxed shopping area to a thriving, party scene. So if you are looking for a lively night out in Lisbon hit for the Barrio Alto area, just make sure you don't have to get up early the next day!!

Located on the Tagus riverfront, a lazy morning or afternoon can be spent here, in the 'new part' of the city. You'll find the oceanurium, cable car rides, exhibition centres, themed gardens and plenty of coffee shops and restaurants. Use the hop on/ off bus to get here and enjoy taking a coffee in the sunshine, before taking a leisurely walk along the waterfront.
