I thought I was a good price for the rossio area - but even for the location it was a total ripoff. I first made a lengthy reservation by internet with a prepaid deposit, and when I sent an email to shorten the stay i had planned, they claimed to not have received it! how convenient for them... get the first email, but not the second? yeah right. when i arrived at the place, it was NOTHING like what was described online - old, dirty, thin cotton blankets and mismatched, worn-out sheets like something from a refugee camp. cigarette ashes on the floor of the room. and the clerk was RUDE!! then when i told him i woudn't stay in such a decrepid excuse for a lodging house, he charged my card anyway! he also lied and told me "there was no way" i would find other affordable accommodation anywhere nearby - what a lie! less than one block away, i found the fantastic pension del norte, with rooms for 35 euros (the exact same price as new aljubarrota) that were clean, nice, and with elevator access! and friendly staff!! i wouldn't recommend the new aljubarrota to my worst enemy. be warned!!close

By the end of the week ours had gained the name 'the pit of despair'. Having said that, some of the bigger rooms had windows/balconies onto the street so DEFINATELY ask for these if you're going to stay there. Staff were very helpful and nice though, and the location is great. 4 flights of stairs and no lift so not for the infirm but lets face it most of us could do with the exercise...I would have given this place 4/5 but for the view so if you can get a better room then you're onto a winner.close

Pensao New Aljubarrota is ideal to have a taste of Lisbon and its hospitality, authenticity and friendliness. Ok, it's basic but ever so cosy and the stairs will keep you fit (remember it's on the 4th floor). Stephanie and Carla you're the best! I'll be back.

I'm a kind of person who don't expect anything except sleeping in terms of accommodation so let me say this hostel is not for everyone. If you want to feel relaxed and at home in your accommodation, I wouldn't reccommend this place. The location is great - it's close to an aero bus stop and any other transportation. You can use towels, a fun in your room, other facilities such as a kitchen, free coffee / tea except a laundry machine. The staffs are very kind and helpful. They are always happy to give information from sightseeing places to aero bus schedule. However, I couldn't lock the room door properly ( the staffs said I had to get used to an old buillding when I complained ). In addition, I couldn't open the window because people in the next building were able to see me easily. The shower always make loud noise when I use. I was also able to hear everything that happened in the next room. So if you want to enjoy night life in Lison or are a party person, this place is acceptable. But if not, try somewhere else! Personaly speaking, I don't think I will stay here again - this was a good experience!close

The location in Baixa is ideal for females traveling alone as it is well lit, safe and difficult to get lost at night. A few caveats: it can get very cold at night, insulation is poor so make sure they provide you with a working space heater when you arrive. Also they are quite stringent about the 72 hour cancellation policy so if you are traveling during the low season when there are more rooms available around lisbon I would avoid booking your whole trip in advance until you have seen the place and are satisfied. Its a decent deal if you want a safe and cheap place to sleep that's a step up from a dorm-style hostel. But don't expect too much beyond that. Linens, curtains and blankets are a bit old and dingy.close

Yes, there were a lot of stairs, but it really was worth it!! It was also great to be able to leave our bags for the day and come and get them later that evening -- for 2 euros it was a really nice thing to not have to worry about them for the day. The bathrooms (2) were small, but clean. The women's shower was broken, but it was actually a nice thing because the men's shower was about 3 times the size of the women's. Breakfast is generous and there's a good resource of guides and maps and info to look at. The bed in number 12 was very comfortable. The building is old and a bit worn, and furnishings match this and add character. Unfortunately, the plumbing's erratic, and our 'ensuite' shower wasn't useable. The outflow leaked into the room and caused terrible smells. This stopped when we started using one of the 2 communal bathrooms. Then one of these developed plumbing problems, so all 12 rooms had to use one bathroom. We were probably lucky and always found it free. Our room was cleaned on our second day od 5, but for the remaining three wasn't touched. As we'd been to the beach and brought some sand back with us, it made the rest of our stay there a bit grubby. On our last day, the owner apologised for the room not having being cleaned that day, as the cleaning girl had a day off, so I assumed that it was meant to have been cleaned everyday We had a balcony which offered an interesting view of the street and all its activities. It can get quite noisy from nearby restaurant music but we found this a pleasant distraction rather than an annoyance. There's no a/c, but we often got a breeze to freshen the air. The residence is on the 4th floor with no elevator, so you need to be fit enough to carry your luggage and yourself up there. The Aljubarrota's best attributes were it's location and friendly staff.close
