Just outside Lille there is, as far as I can judge, a very underutilised modern airport. Maybe the locals don’t want the likes of Michael O’Leary lowering the tone of the place, but why Ryanair doesn’t have Lille in its sights as a base is beyond me. The city itself is very pretty and for the most part well preserved, with a magnificent main square. The architecture of the old town is predominantly Flemish, the shopping is excellent and the restaurants are good (this is France after all), prices being significantly lower than Brussels for example, for similar quality. The place has TGV connections to the rest of France, and a Eurostar to London and Brussels, so it is easily reachable from there. It has a very large student population so it has a relatively good nightlife. I‘m not speaking from personal experience of it, however! Again, I’d recommend it for a long weekend - if you could get there easily. Someone give Michael a ring… |
