Maybe the locals don’t want the likes of Michael O’Leary lowering the tone of the place, but why Ryanair doesn’t have Lille in its sights as a base is beyond me. The city itself is very pretty and for the most part well preserved, with a magnificent main square. The architecture of the old town is predominantly Flemish, the shopping is excellent and the restaurants are good (this is France after all), prices being significantly lower than Brussels for example, for similar quality. The place has TGV connections to the rest of France, and a Eurostar to London and Brussels, so it is easily reachable from there. It has a very large student population so it has a relatively good nightlife. I‘m not speaking from personal experience of it, however! Again, I’d recommend it for a long weekend - if you could get there easily. Someone give Michael a ring…close

Le Jardin d'Alix 88%
Fantastic place in a quiet part of Lille. Not in the heart of the action but easily accessible via tram. Easily worth the effort given the generous hospitality and comfort of the room!

1We enjoyed our stay very much. Great service, beautiful place and nice rooms. By tram we were very easily in Lille in 30 minutes.

It is four miles from the train station and travellers would be better off staying in one of the inexpensive places within 5 minutes walk of the...
