Its a clean place and close to the station, ist okay, but if you don't mind paying 1000 yen-1500 yen (6-9 Euro) more, you get better accommodations with a much higher standard. In the end the room was okay, but there was a construction site behind the house and our room had just a window at the...

However, we didn't enjoy our stay despite this. You need to be clued up on your japanese - the man on the desk didn't speak any english, and didn't make any attempt to understand us, even when we used a phrase book both to speak japanese and to show him written characters. You also have to leave your key at the front desk whenever you leave (nowhere secure to leave your belongings at all, and when we popped back in they had opened up all the rooms), and you can't stay in the hostel between 11am and 3pm. Also, the showers are only available in the evening - nowhere at all to wash or anything in the morning. No communal areas, and a curfew so you can't stay out after midnight.close

Was a pretty hard place to find at the time. We got into a fuzz with the owner when our friends from a another hotel came to VISIT. Of course, not speaking japanese does not help. He was just screaming at us, obviously not pleased with the idea of having people come from the outside...

Construction is bad. Super cold room. Bath (public) is not actually in the building but is in the White HOTEL (not hostel)

This place is really hard to find. You have to ask around where people will direction you to go to the main building where you would find the showers. The actual house where you stay is two blocks south. The location is really close to JR station.

The location can't be beat. It's a good deal, however, there are no showers at the Annex.

The rooms don't have bathrooms, and there can be a wait for the shower, but that's no problem really. I would just say that the cleaning 'kickout' was really tough on me and my boyfriend (and the curfews aren't so great either); he had jet lag and we both really appreciate being able to sleep in when we can, and getting literally kicked out was unpleasant and gave the whole stay a paranoid, nerve-racking tone. We were out by noon, after the proprietor had knocked on our door twice quite angrily, even though we had no idea about a cleaning 'kickout' time (the info on the site makes it look like the public bath at the other hotel has the kickout). I haven't been dressed down and guilted out like that in years; we made him miss his lunch among other complaints. It didn't occur to him to just not clean our room. I'm sure if you abide by his rules he's quite agreeable. I can't say anything for his English, since it was always me trying to get by on my Japanese. Anyway, if you get up and at 'em early, and don't plan on making ANY noise in your room (thin walls), and can communicate okay with people who don't speak English, it's really incredible value since the location is pretty prime for getting anywhere in the city.close

But once we found it, it was easy to walk to the bus station. Rooms are basic, traditional Japanese, but so is the (dirty) toilet, a lowpoint of our trip. Only Japanese is spoken here, and there is no interaction between guests or hosts, nothing in place to promote new friendships. Guests are left on their own. I will look for another place to stay next time.close

almost impossible to find, no address given when we checked the hostelworld site, took me 3 hours to find it by just wandering the streets around the JR Kyoto station

The Japanese room we had was just wonderful, a lot of room. The staff is Takahiro was gorgeous, so much fun to be with. I was just hoping there could be a small common room with say two tables to chat and meet and a cleaner common hand washing sink.
