Kunming is entirely skippable. There is nothing worth seeing here. We were here for a stop along the rode to bigger things and I assume that was the case for every other person at our hostel as well. Anything listed in Lonely Planet as a sight was a dissapointment. The Stone Forrest is a sham if you're expecting natural beauty. It's filled with manmade ponds, sidewalks, perfectly mown lawns, and "ethnic minorities" costumed as if it were Epcot Center. And all for 140 RMB. Tai gui le (toooo expensive). There are some karst formations, yes, but it's more like an oversized Chinese rock garden. If you want the real deal, head over to Guangxi province. If you are in Kunming and want a good Chinese meal, head to the Yunnan Family Mansion (I think that's the name) along the road towards the two white pagodas (sorry I can't be more specific). This is a gorgeous restaurant with excellent service located inside a completely amazing old mansion. The prices are reasonable and there is a picture menu for non-Chinese speakers. A gem of a place for China in general... So yah, unless you want to fly in for a great meal at the mansion- SKIP KUNMING!

The best place to eat in Kunmining is Mama Fu's Can Ting. It has a good mix of Chinese and Western food. It has a cute atmosphere with pictures of Hollywood actors posted on the walls. The food is great and the staff is wonderful.

Kunming has the reputation of being a "spring city" and the climate is really great. However the city needs a facelift if it is to keep its reputation. A spring city should be a beautiful city and Kunming is not that at the moment. It needs money spent on it to reach its true potential.

Kunming is a serviceable city that's better than the average Chinese sprawl, but its chief interest is that of a starting point for other Yunnan adventures. Don't spend much time here; get your bearings and run off to Dali or Xishuangbanna as soon as you can; you won't regret your decision!

Kunming was just another city, we came here to get our Vietnamese visa, so had to stay a few days. Was nice to just chill out after 4 months of moving around every other day, otherwise you can do it all in a day.

If u've been to Lijiang and visited many of Lijiang's major tourist attractions, I don't think Kunming has a lot to offer. However, if u haven't seen lijiang, kunming might be worth it.
