The costs that added to the fees were the onsen (hot springs) that they had within the ryokan. The set-up was very nice but there were no-see-'ems in the female onsen (hot springs are separated by gender) so I got bit while bathing! The location was in the center of the peninsula so we still drove to Shimoda to see the historic monuments. But the area felt safe and it was quiet (so good sleep). I think the most impressive point was that they were rice-paper folding doors, along with real tatami mats. When it was evening they laid the futons out for us (we didn't have to put them away either). So it was very traditional Japanese set-up in room style. Now, this meant the hall way was cold (you only heat one room at a time and your bed-room doubles as your living room during the daytime when the futon is put away), but enjoyable. There were 110 volt outlets, a safe to store possessions, a small color-TV, our own ofudo (a small but deep bath 'tub'), our own toilet, and our own balcony view that overlooked portions of the man-made lake in the center of the ryokan. The only bad point I have is that when I turned on the water to the ofudo it came out dirty and cold (hence I opted for the 300yen trip to the hot springs within the ryokan).close

The Onsen - hot baths - was nice and staff could speak English well! Easy to access from the train station and fine beaches near.
