Sorrento is very clean and has a small city that offers great seafood and all Italy's specialty cuisines. I would definatly reccomend it to everyone who wants to make the trip to Southern Italy, its worth it. Sorrento is an excellent alternative to staying in Napoli - it isn't plagued by the same poverty and graffiti. The town is beautiful and offers convenient ferries to Capri, one of the most beautiful places on earth. Sorrento is linked to Naples by an inter-city train system that is farily convienient. Early spring is especially perfect here because of all the orange and lemon groves in various backyards and gardens. Sorrento is full of shopping streets that wind themselves around the city. Never once did I feel out of place or afraid of anything. The locals were all very accomodating and so friendly! Stayed at the "Sorrento Holiday House" ( www.sorrentoholiday.info), a gracious apartment on the Sorrento Hills that offers tranquillity and a wonderful sea view over the Gulf of Naples.close

We arrived in Sorrento by train from Naples (which took about 50mins so make sure you get a seat!!). Upon arrival we found that our hotel had a complimentary shuttle bus service, the pickup was about a 3 mins walk from the train station. We arrived in our hotel and then went to explore Sorrento. It is a busy little tourist town with lots of restaurants to choose from and the best ice cream shop I’ve ever been in, just off the Piazza Tasso. Wonderful restaurants, fantastic wine, great little streets to wander around, beautiful views of the sea and sunsets. Sorrento is a wonderful place to relax in and perfect location for day trips to Pompeii, Capri, Positano and Amalfi. The local train and bus service were very good and cheap. We took a boat trip to Amalfi and then the bus back to Sorrento, best of both worlds!! We got to see the wonderful coast line and towns from the sea and then the breathtaking views and cliff drops from the bus on the way back. Not a journey for the faint hearted!! I would definitely recommend Sorrento for a visit, it is not cheap but worth every penny!!close

The windy coast Road the leads out to Sorrento has some amazing scenery, and if you continue on past Sorrento you join up with the Amalfi drive which goes through Positano, Praiano and Amalfi before joining up with the main road again. When we were there (March) Sorrento was very busy. Most of the tourists seemed to be Italian though, so it wasn’t like a typical tourist destination. The town itself has lost of restaurants to choose from and is centred around the old port. There aren’t really any beaches though, so you’d have to happy with your hotel pool. In terms of things to do in Sorrento, there isn’t a huge amount. You can drive the Amalfi coast, and take trips to the island of Capri, which is well worth a visit. It’s also only about an hour from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Apart from that, the weather’s great so it’s a nice place to unwind.close

We stayed in a campsite about 2 km outside of the town and had a chalet on a cliff side that over looked the bay, you couldn't ask for better! There was a restaurant on the campsite that did take away, we used to get pizza, cheap wine and sit on our little balcony looking at the view, priceless. The town itself is really nice and worth a visit. The main reason we had stopped here though was to do a tour of Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. I'll add more about them in reviews as they are excellent. We also visited the Island of Capri, I thought it was only so so if you have a spare few hours then go but I would recommend Pompeii of Vesuvius over it.close

Many of the cities in the north have clear 'tourist fatigue' where they are tired of the swarms of tourists. Sorrento seemed happy to be a tourist town and welcoming and friendly. We didn't encounter any of the hidden charges that might appear on your bills in say Florence or Venice, and drinks were all very reasonable. Weather is a bit volatile in September but still got nice days with the occassional shower. Would certainly visit again.close

It has the usual historical buildings, markets and street cafes/bars. It has a reputation for being one of the most romantic city's in the world. I didn't quite get that vibe myself (neither did my girlfriend!). One thing that really stood out was the sheer volume of traffic. It never stops and travelling around the area is a nerve-racking experience given that every other driver/rider is on a suicide mission to crash into you! The view from the marina and the mountain roads going into town are pretty spectacular. All in all it's worth a visit for a day or two, but not among the best city break destinations available.close
