Naples is like an amalgamation of various Italian cities - it has the attitude of Milan, the sights of Rome, the passion of Venice and the culinary delights of Florence. It is noisy and slightly intimidating, but it is equally intriguing and extremely engaging. Plus it boasts one of the most spectacular settings in Italy, overlooking the Bay of Naples. Many who stop here only do so for a number of hours before going further south to Capri or Sorrento, as Naples is the gateway to both destinations. But if you are travelling to Naples, spend a day or two here before shooting off. You won't regret it.

The ruins are amazing, the Herculaneum is a must-see. Plan a whole day for Pompei, its huge and takes ages to see it all... however not all the rooms/areas are open. Its difficult to find cheap places to eat (some places charge 22euros for a pizza but you can also find huge tasty pizzas for 6euro each). close

You will find everything you need for a great city break from the famous Neapolitan pizza for your lunch to the most trendy and expensive designer shops. Naples has however a bad traffic issue, cars are flying all over the place, beware when you try to cross the streets, it is also not exactly a sparkling clean city but still has a lot of charm and appeal to it.close

Nothing has been fixed up for the tourists, as there arnt many. For this reason the authenticity and italian culture of the region is rich and thriving. Although there is a need to watch your possessions, just as is the case through all of italy. The surounding regions are easy to get to and each offer a new amazing experience, atmosphere and culture. There just isnt enough time to see it all...but ill be back. Even as a lone female traveller!close

Getting information about travelling is almost impossible, we needed 45 minutes and passed 7 counters before we could get a ticket to Amalfi. If they give you information most of the time they seem like they are suffering or shrug their shoulders. People who speak Italian are luckier, they get information more easily. Most buses are late but sometimes early e.g. the bus coming back from Vesuv left early so we were forced to stay there for a whole hour probably because they want tourists to buy something. Also the trip to Vesuv took 20 minutes longer just because of the forced stop at a local shop where there was nothing else to do just to buy some kitch. If you ask the newsagent by the train stop in Sorrento where the bus stop is, as there is a note that it is replaced to XY street, he says why should he know where that street is... I liked all the cultural heritage in Naples but locals do not seem to care much about it. If you buy an artecard 7 days, be prepared that in several sites they only know about the 3-day card and you can enter at a reduced price only, not for free as it would be normal for the 7-day card.close

Avoid certain seedy areas around the train station, and make sure you have a lock for your bag. The pizza is amazing - go to Gino Sorbillo on Via Tribunali. Do the underground tour (on the same road - called Napoli Sotterranea) its good value for money (only 8 euros student) and really interesting. The park at Naples bay is a really nice place to relax if the weather is nice, but it is about the only green place in the city. Pompei is a really good day trip but is big so leave about 4 hours to go round. The bus up to Vesuvius is also a great trip you can do in half a day. Out of Venice, Florence and here, this was our favourite place in Italy - its not a gimmick or only highbrow culture - theres a lot to do for everyone and its affordable.close

We were very disappointed by the archeological museum. We visited this museum in order to see the Pompei discoveries (mosaics, frescoes...) At the time we visited it, the 13 rooms about Pompei frescoes were closed (without being advised at the entrance) and we had to pay for an exhibition, we were not interested in ! Conclusion, we had to pay 9€ each for not seeing things that were supposed to be displayed !close

The only issue that we had with the hotel was finding it in the first place. The street is small and doesnt show up on some of the maps, so ensure that you know where you are going in advance. Other than that, it was great!

The staff are brilliant. Even though most of them did not speak much English and we did not speak much Italian they were very kind and helpful when we needed to contact home urgently (after the London bombs on July 7).

The hotel is quite close to the train station and is like a little spot of sunshine in the cloudiness of Naples. The people were very nice and the room was fantastic!

Top Rated Naples Restaurants

  1. Sorbillo100%

'Da Michele' is regarded by many to have the best pizza in Naples, but this place is definitely my favourite. Open since 1935, there are lots of pizza to choose from, some as little as €3! Be prepared to wait for a table though.

This restaurant is located at the end of the main shopping street Via Toledo it displays the “Vera Pizza” sign, this is granted to the pizzerias of Naples that take pride to cook their pizzas in a wood burning oven and according to the authentic Neapolitan recipe. The place is not exactly fancy it looks nothing like the trendy Italian restaurants you can...

You can get a boat from Naples to Capri and it costs €30 return. When you get to Capri’s marina you can reach the main town by cable train or walking. Victim of probably the most famous volcano eruption ever, Pompeii has to be seen to be believed. As you wander around the streets of the ancient city, it is hard to fathom that it was once completely buried. Highlights of Italy's number one tourist attraction include Teatro Grande and Anfiteatro.

On quite a hot afternoon we decided to find some freshness down under the city and we took a tour (in Italian we both speak French which is quite similar so we understood most of the comments) in the catacombs. Top Rated Naples Bars

  1. Aret' A Palm80%

This small, dark bar on one of Naples' busiest squares is a popular hangout with locals and students. Most converge on the square itself, but step inside and the friendly barman will do his best to strike up a conversation with you in his best broken English.
