After complaining, the lady was rude to me and refused to actually check the room to believe me; Cleanliness-rooms smelled of mildew and had cockroaches crawling around; Surrounding area--hustlers harassing you everyday trying to get you to buy custom made suits outside the hostel. Overall, I would not stay at this place or anywhere near Nathan Road.close

My friend and I were in a two bed dorm which was small, to be expected in Hong Kong, but had ensuite with a really powerful shower, more like a wet room but I think this is pretty common here.. Air con worked and the staff were lovely.

There are a lot of hawkers and touts in the area trying to sell you stuff of get you into their hotel etc, but this hostel had the forethought to have 1 of their own staff acting as look out on the street with names of people with reservations to counter the touts! Very impressive! Also very clean and at a reasonable rate. When I come back to Hong Kong I'll stay here. Just be aware that as with all Hong Kong hostels the rooms are very small because property prices are so high.close

The staff was rude and obnoxious. He actually overbooked, so we were forced to live in an extremely dirty room for a night, which he wanted us to pay extra for. Though the hostel is in a good location, I'm sure you can find another hostel in the same vicinity with friendlier staff.

We had to share a room with a complete stranger the first night, and the manager tried to fast-talk us into changing our room the first few nights that we stayed there. He yellled at all of us, and tried to blame his shiftiness on the other traveler we stayed with the first night. We didn't have any hot water for most of our stay, but I didn't feel so bad about that after hearing another guest saying that her room didn't have a toilet seat. The computer appeared and disappeared sporadically, and my friend and I generally felt uncomfortable. The location can't be beat, but other than that, it was a completely negative experience. I am shocked that this was top rated. I use hostelworld.com frequently, and this is the first time they've led me to a total dive.close

I stayed here for 7 nights with my son. The staff was friendly. Bathrooms appeared to be cleaned on a continuous basis--a real plus. subway just few seconds walk away. You aren't there for the luxury, but you aren't slumming it either. I would pay more to stay there again!

It was hard to sleep at times because many people, including the owner, would shout to others (employees and guests) Also, 10 minutes of free Internet was advertised via a sign by the computer but if you tried to use it they would charge in hopes that you didn't see the posted sign. We got charged a crazy HK $200 key deposit and later found out that other people were just asked for HK $50. We were given a room with one bed when we had served one for two people and when we asked for it to be fixed they told us to wait until the next day. We had to insist on getting what we paid for. I had a friend call me a few times to this property and she complained that the man who answered the phone, the owner, was very rude and would not let her finish speaking before hanging up on her. The only person I found a bit friendly was an older lady who I had assumed to be the owner's wife but later found out it wasn't. I would never recommend this place to anyone. In fact I will advertise against it. It is not worth it. It is located near many attractions but there are also many sketchy people at ground level, by the elevators, who approach you every single time you try to go in or out of the building trying to sell you things, exchange money or offer a room for rent. Once we left our building, Chungking Mansions, we felt better about being in Hong Kong.close

And the room that we ended up staying in was not even at the hostel we booked to be at, so we did not really have much choice over which room to take. The manager only seems to see things from one perspective and doesnt really understand the customer's needs and wants and can end up getting quite verbally aggressive. The other staff though are lovely and have tried to make our stay here as pleasant as possible by keeping our rooms clean etc. The value is ok and the location is good if you're a sighseeing backpacker, but just have an open mind when you get here. But bear in mind this review is not even for the Oriental Pearl Hostel as we're not even staying there! Security on the floor is ok but be weary about the ground floor and keep all valuables close and there are alot of lurkers.close
