The Garden Hostel is a great, affordable place. The staff was very helpful and friendly. They bent over backwards to make sure I was comfortable. Joe Chan is a great guy! And so is Ben, the guy who works on the 7th floor.

It is in a horrible building and it is filthy and they put us out on the street without even caring!! they claim to not be able to open their hostel world account and that is why they did not have our reservation so on the weekend of Chinese New Year they put us and two other groups out on the street, we all ended up spending the night at the airport because EVERYTHING was full!! It was horrible and everybody we saw that was staying there just told us horror stories and said their rooms were like "prison cells" the first night and then they got put into another room the next night, but it was still not what they ordered. The owner hung up on us when we tried to call and ask about our reservation and just so you know they own many of the hostels in C and D in Chungking Mansion I highly recommend staying elsewhere. Also just so you know Toms Guest House is not owned by them and it is on the same floor and the lady is very helpful. AVOID!close

We arrived to the floor where the Garden Hostel was and was told to go down to the 14th floor as the main reception was there. We got there and no one was at the lobby. We waited for quite some time and some sketchy man came by and said they all went home and wouldn't come back until 12am or even 2am. Then he started asking if we wanted a room because there was apparently no more rooms available. He left and 2 minutes later some other schmo came in trying to sell us a room on the 7th floor. I refused as i had a reservation which should be honoured. Since he said he worked at the reception (which he clearly didn't) I played along and got him to look through the reservations at the desk. That folder was a mess! Our reservation wasn't even in there. A Canadian couple showed up only to find out there were no more rooms and their reservation was basically void too. Two Swedish girls also had the same happen to them as well. I went up to the 16th floor where the hostel was and saw that same first guy there and i argued with him about my dilemma. He yelled and said "I give you a room, you don't want it so now you go!!" Well, not feeling safe anymore, we left to find a hotel to stay at (good luck during Chinese New Year). We ended up spending the night at the Hong Kong Airport. STAY AWARE FROM ANY HOSTELS IN CHUNGKING MANSIONS. THEY ARE A SCAM AND YOU MAY END UP PAYING MORE. Cosmic Guest House in the Mirador Mansion (which is next to ChungKing Mansions) is nice and is run by local Hong Kong residents who are incredibly friendly. Stay there instead.close

DO NOT STAY HERE!!!! We turned up and they said they did not have a room for us as they do not take bookings from Hostelworld. They made no effort to help us find another room either.

The building is a mad house. The ground floor has everything and is busy from 9am - 12am (and later). I arrived at the Garden Hostel and was then taken to a different floor and ended up in another hostel all together. I guess they are all very similar. The location is brilliant, 5 minute walk to the Star Ferry and the MTR is across the road. The actual mayhem downstairs does include internet cafes, laundries and I had the best curry ever! However, don't go to this hostel thinking you will meet other travellers and have a few beers in the evening. The place I stayed had 6 rooms, my room was big enough for a single bed and a little more - the 'ensuite' bathroom was a toilet with a shower attachment fixed to a boiler. You shower whilst standing next to the toilet. I was on the 7th floor (there are 16) and I had some of the quietest and comfortable nights sleep of my 3 week trip through China. I felt perfectly safe there, but I am male, and I suspect a female lone traveller may feel a little nervous going to and from the hostels. There is only one lift going to your floor and sometimes there is a wait of about 15 minutes. There are about 6 blocks in Chung King mansions and they are all full of guest houses/hostels. The area is very ethnically diverse. Overall I had a good 3 nights but that was enough for me.close

Basically I turned up, they did not have a booking, I got moved to another guesthouse, they only had a single room with shared bathroom despite me paying for a private bathroom. I was moved the next day to an even smaller room. The area itself is convenient, not so sure about the safety aspect though. Safety on the guesthouse floor depends whether guests shut the gated door (they didn't always). The mansion itself is crawling with hecklers and the lift is poky, dirty and cramped - it didn't feel safe. It was also freezing. The shared bathroom had 10 seconds worth of hot water in the shower. None in the tap. The private bathroom had enough hot water to shower. There was no heating, even in the coldest CNY for almost 10 years. I am rating Peking Guesthouse as the Garden Hostel didn't even manage to register my booking - whether that is the fault of hostelworld or the Garden Hostel, who knows.close

They do not seem to have the amenities they claim to have. The guy that is on reception 24/7 is often asleep between 0400-1100hrs, just shake him to check in!! He is also very loud at night talking with others. Other than that location is EXCELLENT and room very clean. If you simply want a place to lay your head its perfect. If you want a hostel with common room, computers, food etc this isnt for you.close
