It was a Portuguese colony for about 450 years, the most obvious evidence of this is Old Goa, a city with a good few beautiful temples, it worth visiting. Most of the people speak Portuguese and very good English too, they are very friendly and helpful, of course they try to sell the tourists anything they can and they are a bit pushy. There is a huge market on Wednesdays in Anjuna Beach; here you'll find everything from Indian crafts and spices to the newest London Club wear. My favorite beach is Benaulim, south from the biggest city Panaji, very quiet and relaxing. If you would rather go to a nosier place seeking for nightlife then Calangute on the north is your choice. There is another wonderful beach on the south called Palolem surrounded by palm forests and mountains, here you will find the real white sand, however swimming is not recommended in most of the beaches of Goa because of the strong currents in the ocean. Both the accommodation and food are very cheap and most of the time they are good value for money. It is nice to chill out in one of the beach shacks sipping the most famous local spirit: the Caju Feni (spirit made of cashews) with Limca (fizzy drink with lemon flavor) while enjoying the sunset. The only negative thing is the poverty, however if you look at the people they seem to be happy as they are and they smile much more then the people in Europe, that is something we could learn from them!!close
