The small city center is very beautiful with an impressive castle (Château des Comtes) surrounded by a water-filled moat and three ancient towers on the skyline (St Bavo's Cathedral, the Belfrey and the church of St Nicholas). The shopping is good and the food very acceptable. It's only 30 minutes from Brussels by train, so easy to fit into a long weekend trip....close

The city center is gorgeous with plenty of stores, restaurants and bars. The people are friendly and everything is in walking distance of each other. The churches and cathedrals are really cool and the city at night just looks amazing. I don't know much about the party scene but I have heard good things and there are many college students studying there. There aren't very many tourists and it seemed that most of the tourists were european, so that was nice being an American and not seeing all the typical american tourists. If you are in the Gent area, do go!!!close

Very NOISY.. lack of foresight by hotel to sound proof rooms with a couple of layers of Gib Fibreboard to quieten room and ceiling. Wooden floors make sound also echo. Also cold room. There was no coffee kettle faculties as advertised in my room, and the communal coffee-tea area on the floor...

place still under construction getting ready in a few weeks but even like that was really nice place to stay and very friendly service. very happy at all! so confortable. beautiful breakfast!

HI De Draecke Gent 76%
Good hostel near the castle. The only problem is that it's quite far from the station. But in fact, this is the main station which is too far from the town center. However there is a tram which is direct. Staff was very friendly.

– posted on Nov 2008 5Not the cleanest but for the price paid, fair enough. Location is untouchable. Very atmospheric at night and served by the no. 1 tram from the station. Would recommend staying here if going with friends, maybe not ideal for a romantic stay.
