Galway horse races takes place the last week of July/first week August and they are a must if you are visting the city. Be warned though accommodation is very limited so book well in advance. There are buses heading out from Eyre Sq each day of the 7 day race meet and are well worth it. It's up to you how much money you want to spend on some bets but you could be lucky unlike me this year!! You can indulge yourself in the champagne tent or mingle with the punters! Really is great fun and the party conintues in Galway city in the evenings.

As legend has it, this window marks the spot where the Mayor of Galway hung his son in the early 16th century. He did so after his son murdered a visiting Spaniard and it is said that this was done to show that the enforcement of the law was more important than that of the bonds of family.

One of the symbols of Galway City this was once part of the city walls. It was built in 1594 in order to protect the harbour at a time when trade with Spain was vital to the city's survival. These days it's the perfect place to sit down and enjoy some lunch alfresco on one of the stone seats located near the arch.

This is one of the largest and most dominating buildings in Galway and construction of the Cathedral began in 1958 and was completed in 1965. It is located on the site of the former city jail and features a dome at a height of 145ft.

Great week in Galway. Starts on the Monday before the bank hol weekend in August. Draws huge crowds to Galway every year. We went on Fri evening. Starts at 5.30. Buses leave from Eyre Sq. Costs 25 euro to get in. Great fun. Back into Galway city then for drinks and craic. Great fun and definitely recommend it if you are in the area this time of the year.
