If you stay outside the Hotel Zone you will avoid the package holiday makers. We only saw a few backpackers around Funchal. While it caters for tourists, it is very Portuguese, very Madieran. If you want a holiday with a mild climate and great food then this is the place to go. If you self cater go along to Funchal's market for fresh fish, meat and fruit. Fruit like silver banana's and 4 or five different types of passion fruit are grown on the island. They taste excellent. It caters for active holidays as well. You can take the levadas for an easier walk or go on treks in the centre of the island. While the weather was cloudy at times you still need suncream and a sun hat otherwise you will get sunburned. At Funchal's level the temperature varies from 19-20 degrees celcius. Public transport is excellent and really cheap as are the restaurants. The people are helpful, friendly and seem quite happy. Madiera is lovely and is well worth a visit if you wish to go somewhere that isn't thronging with club 18 to 30ers.close

É uma Pensão muito simpática e acolhedora. Excelente relação qualidade preço. O pessoal do Staff é muito simpático e é tudo muito limpo! Recomendo.

Residencial Vila Camacho 83%
Brilliant! Great view from the balcony - very romantic! 20 minutes walk into town, but a very steep walk back up. (Everything is steep in Madeira!) Wouldn't have the breakfast though.

Residencial Monte Verde 81%
can't fault the place for the price,breakfast was more than ample,room was very clean and a lovely view from balcony. Funchal is very hilly and its a killer getting around especially in very hot humid conditions so although we had an excellent holiday if we were to go again we would chose...
