Combining business and culture in a multi-cultural environment, Frankfurt provides visitors with a wealth of things to experience. It’s the fifth largest city and Germany and is much more than just the country’s financial centre. Located on the river Main in south-west Germany, Frankfurt is home to important financial institutions such as the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, European Central Bank and German Federal Bank. The city’s skyline is dotted with some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe, earning Frankfurt the nickname ‘Mainhatten’. Cultural points of interest include the Gothic-style Frankfurt Cathedral, St. Paul’s Church and the Old Opera House. The city boasts a large number of museums, celebrated in the popular Museumsurferfest which takes place each year in August. The botanic gardens of Palmgarten are perfect for a relaxed stroll. And for a quicker pace, try the bustling Zeil shopping street or the large number of restaurants, bars and clubs throughout the city.

The hotel staff were OK-- no real problems. The man at the fron desk ignored me for a little bit while I was waiting to check-in, but he left later and was replaced by a younger, cooler reception-man. Beds are quite comfy, very clean rooms, bathrooms are very nice and kept in good condition. The key card system is a bit difficult to master, but it is a very ingenious way of securing the hallways from outsiders. Its located inside and old building, the elevator is tony, so if you have lots of luggage, you may have to make a few trips between floors. Great hostel, great location!close

The shopping area was so full of construction work that it did not seem like a shopping area at all. In fact, it was so grey that even the fun of shopping was dampened. What i found interesting about frenkfurt was the food - applewine, different sausages, cheeses and also the cheesecake! Do visit the kleinmarket to see the different foods they offer! if you go upstairs, you can even choose some wine and some tidbits to enjoy along the corridor!close

I had heard it referred to as the “Manhattan of Europe” before visiting so, having been to New York, I expected something really spectacular. While there are some very impressive buildings there, it isn’t quite New York just yet. There is certainly no doubt about the scale of their trade show/conference center, the Messe Frankfurt. I attended the International car show there and was amazed at the size of the complex of exhibition halls. The main shopping street in Frankfurt is Zeil, which is a pedestrian street lined with a very good selection of shops and side streets with restaurants. It is best to look up information on shopping before you go, as I found myself spending a lot of time looking for an electronics shop. To my amazement, the electronics shop that I found could take neither my credit card nor Cirrus debit card. So, have cash at the ready. Eating out in Frankfurt is great, with many fine restaurants and local German beers. Even in September, it was nice to eat at the pavement seated areas in the evening. In fact, it may be your only choice, as the Germans still have not banned smoking inside restaurants. Although Frankfurt’s airport is the second busiest in Europe, it was generally clean, modern and efficient – with the exception of the miserably poor security clearance section. Jostling in a crowded area for one of just two grumpy German policemen to check my passport wasn’t exactly fun. It was then on to… not one, but two separate sets of security screening gates. I left Frankfurt airport wondering about the German reputation for efficiency!close

However you might think this was a bad idea, but it creates the impression of a modern bustling busy city with a lot of little nooks and historical pockets to explore.

Frankfurt is a hugely important city economically and you will see lots of banks etc throughout the financial centre. However there are also loads and loads of really interesting museums and art galleries and theatres in and around the Aldstadt area.

The Sachsenhausen area is full of cafe's bars and restaurants, and is really lively at night, and if you are looking to dance try Cooky's nightclub (Am Salzhaus 4)... it's great fun!close

It's most associated with financial and transport facilities. It's very easy to get to with one of the world's busiest airports, the Frankfurt International, and they've got an absolutely EXCELLENT transport system that can get you anwyhere you need to go quickly. When walking around the city, don't forget to look in front of you to see where you're going - given the amount of skyscrapers has, it's easy to see why it's called a European manhattan. I spent all the time looking up in awe, though I enjoyed the altstadt as well. The food is great as always without being as expensive as say somewhere like Dublin and the beer is local depending on where you go for a pint. I went over for the 2006 book fair, in mid-October so the weather was quite chilly - I made sure I had a warm jacket, but with being indoors and the massive crowds descending on the city the cold wasn't really an issue. One thing i really benefited from was having a german local there - pointed me to the quieter bars, the better restaurants and having a bit of German helped as well. A city I'd like to have seen on holiday. Definitely earmarked for a return.close
