Home to a number of important European institutions, including the European Parliament, Strasbourg can be found in Alsace, which is a region in the north-eastern part of France. The city covers an area in excess of 30 square miles and sports a population of around 300,000 people. Close to the German border, Strasbourg stands on the Ill River. Strasbourg’s Cathedral of Our Lady is a Gothic masterpiece and boasts an impressive astronomical clock, and is one of the city’s main attractions. Another sight that shouldn’t be missed is the Ponts Couverts, a medieval bridge with four towers. Check out Place Kléber too, as it’s the city’s biggest and most important square. For a little green, head to the Parc de l’Orangerie, a beautiful open park area complete with a small zoo. Museums and art galleries are well represented in Strasbourg too, with the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Musée Alsacien being two of the more popular. Culturally, the city has plenty to offer in terms of nightlife and it is home to the Philharmonique de Strasbourg, one of the oldest orchestras of its kind in this part of the world. Don’t worry if you’re looking for something a bit more casual though, as the city also hosts a large number of bars offering a wide variety of local brews.
