Conjuring up images of pyramids and towering minarets, Cairo is both the capital and largest city of Egypt. Home to around 8 million people, it's also the most populated city in Africa. Found on the River Nile, Cairo is divided into a number of different sections. The oldest area is the eastern part of the city, and here's where you'll find some of Cairo's most notable mosques. In Midan Tahrir in the western area of the city, check out the beautiful boulevards and gardens, as well as one of the city’s main attractions. This is the Egyptian Museum, a vast complex displaying over 136,000 Egyptian antiquities. Then there are the Pyramids of Giza, a stunning sight deserving of their title as one of the Seven Great Wonders of the World. Located to the west of the city centre, here's also where you'll find the iconic Sphinx. Not just about ancient sites and historic locations, Cairo also offers a great selection of restaurants and snack stalls. And while you're there, be sure to check out some of the traditional coffee houses, where you can sip on a coffee or even try a shisha water pipe.
