Built in 1792, it is Ireland's most famous disused prison. It held throughout the years many famous Nationalists and Republicans in members of the Society of United Irishmen (1798), Young Irelanders (c1840s), Fenians and Land agitators, Parnell, Davitt. The leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were executed here. It is also where famous movies like "In the name of the Father" were filmed.close

The theatre... more I dont remember ever having a bad night at the Gate, for me its one of the best Theatres in Dublin. They show a mix of comedy, drama, intellectual and no-so intellectual plays which i think generally suit everyone! Prices are competitive and usually start from under 20 euros. The theatre itself is quite comfortable, its not big and although a little worn i think it gives it character. The location at the top of O Connell Street is central and if you want a really nice night book dinner in Chapter One restaurant around the corner, they have a great early bird and even allow you to back for dessert after the play has finished. The Gate theatre does offer parking for attendees, but this may have to be booked in advance.close

   Both of my trips to Dublin have started here. It's a great tour/museum/bar. Who knew a beer company could have such an interesting history? Even better is the clever way the tour is laid out, taking you through this old building in an imaginative way.

   I went for a wonder around the courtyards to admire the architecture and of course 'people watch'! I picked up a coffee in the cafe and was lucky to happen upon an outdoor art exhibition featuring various Irish sculptures!

I did have a valid excuse however, I had some friends visiting... more If you are Irish, going to the Croke Park museum is a bit like going to the Zoo, its only acceptable as a school tour, and after that people may start to look at you strangely when you tell them you where you have been at the weekend. I did have a valid excuse however, I had some friends visiting for the weekend and I lived only 5 minutes walk from Croke Park, so it was an easy sell. And you know what? I really enjoyed it! They run guided tours around the stadium every half hour during busy times and you are also free to wander around the museum at your leisure. The tour of the stadium was interesting and the tour guide was both informative and funny, which always helps. Croke Park is pretty impressive and sitting on the stands looking around its easy to imagine the noise of up to 70,000 people during a match day. The museum is extremely interactive, there is a great audio visual section showing the history of the GAA and of its place in Irish history and society, and lots of nice features that allow you to find you the history of your local GAA Club for example. Its also good for those who know nothing about the sport, My friends knew nothing about either football or hurling and they also found it really good, and there was enough information to give them a pretty good overall idea of what the GAA is and how it's affected family life here. There is a nice section for kids with lots of games to test your agility, hand eye coordination etc, as well as a place where you can practise your skills with a football or hurley which seemed to prove a hit with the grown ups as well as the kids.close

    I was amazed to realise that there was an entrance fee into the cathedral. €5 for adults is way too much i reckon.. It really dampened my visit of the cathedral.

    I've been to a good few zoos by now and honestly don't think much of Dublin Zoo, save your money and enjoy a day in Pheonix park for Free! Last time I was there lots of the animals weren't there, lots of monkeys though (hmmm)
