We've had a great time in The Oliver St John Gogarty. An ideal location to explore Dublin. Food in the pub was very good!

Disgusting, filthy, drab and unkept apartments. Despite complaining to management, no compensation offered. Doors do not lock, therefore major security threat. Very poor value for money. Freezing cold apartment with only one shower working for five people!!!! Book at your own risk.

We have the large 6 per aptm ( no 6) It can be quite noisy at night but we expected that because you can't get any more central than it is. Gogerty's is great and stays open til 2.30/3am. Restaurant is pricy but good. Lots of choice nearby for all price ranges but on the whole Dublin is expensive.close

Mixed age group from 27 - 58 Apartments were great, spacious and excellent kitchen facilities. Main issue was that many of the heaters did not work, especially the bathroom one. Both bathrooms were freezing and the showers were poor.

When we were able to get through the crowds of noisy people to the desk person, he was surly and unhelpful. He wanted full payment in advance. Based on the description - a Penthouse - and picture on their website, we assumed we were going to have a beautiful room. The entry area to get to the rooms was dirty, with old cups and what appeared to be abandoned clothes, but we still kept our hopes up. You had to walk across the roof to get to the apartment, and the entrance was open to the surrounding buildings. We walked into the room, which was freezing cold, somewhere in the 40's. We assumed there would be heat. Once we found the controls for the heat, none worked. By this time we were getting upset with the place. We checked the bedrooms and there were all sorts of dirty nooks and crannies, like the cleaning was cursory, quick and haphazard. Our linens appeared to be clean, which was the only thing in their favor. We then checked the kitchen, which was dirty. The refrigerator was so gross, we didn't want to put any of our drinks in, and based on the lack of cleanliness throughout, we were afraid to even use the glasses. At this point, we decided to get out of our ice-cold room and go check out the traditional Irish music at a pub. When I went to lock the door, I found out that it would not lock because someone had broken it. I couldn't tell if it had been forced, as in a burglary, or it was just broken. In any case, it would not lock. I went downstairs to ask for some help in getting the door lock fixed. The guy at the front desk told me that there was no one there to help, that he might be able to come look at it when he got off for the night. I told him that was unacceptable, that we had all of our things in the room, and wanted to leave the hotel knowing our room was at least locked. Based on the location, we also wnated some assurance that we could sleep behind a locked door. He said we would either have to leave it open (there was a big sign next to his head that said "Not responsible for lost or stolen goods") or wait until he got off. Now we had two days to enjoy Dublin, and we were going to end up being prisoners in our own, ice cold, dirty room because we couldn't leave all our luggage and just hope no one stole anything. Plus, even if it were acceptable, we would not be Able to lock the door when we went to bed, and none of us could stomach the idea of having an unlocked door all night. We all had had enough by this point. I left to find another place to stay. I came back, we picked up all our bags and went down to the front desk. The place was jammed with drunk, loud people. I waited patiently, while my wife and friends stood there in the entryway with all of our luggage. I told the guy that the accommodations were unacceptable and that I wanted a refund. He refused. When I returned to the U.S., I called my credit card company to say that the charge was bogus. We stayed only long enough to discover how bad the place was, how many lies were on the website, find another accommodation, and wait in line several times for what amounted to non-existent service. The whole process took about 30-40 minutes, with the majority of the time taken up waiting in lines, We derived no - zero - benefit from the few moments we were there. Our final impression of the place is it is a crash pad for drunken teenagers, some of which might accept such dirty, gross surroundings. Any sane adult wouldn't. We again dodged a few pools of aging vomit, and left for another hotel. Gogarty's charged us for two nights.close

I know the price is cheap but they really need an overhaul. The kitchen although looked clean on the surface it smelt quite rancid (drains/grease?). We had to throw all the windows open to try and get rid of it but it was persistant. The rooms in general appeared clean. Duvets under the duvet covers really stained - not nice. The bathrooms need some money spending. One toilet seat badly chipped enamel. The shower in the other bathroom had a broken shower head clamp so kept falling on the floor. It was also difficult to get a decent water temperature (ie not too cold and not scalding). Also the water pressure from that shower was poor. Tiling, grouting is rough and the ceiling over the shower stained. Taps also broken, leaking and not functioning very well. Broken toilet roll holder. Very poor lighting. The paintwork in the apartment was quite fresh in general. The sofas in the lounge are quite worn and the TVs buttons were all broken so it wasn't workable. We didn't feel the urge to use the room for those reasons. I remember staying at St Johns in 1997 for a hen do and found it clean and reasonable at that time but I now think the place is tired. The reception staff were also disinterested and not very friendly. My sister also got bitten on the ankle, back and legs and feared it might be fleas!! As you have sent me this email for review and I have taken the time to respond, I hope you will take some interest in my comments. Maybe I expect too much for my money??
